Product Description

Amazon Review

A lazy and fat farmer spends all day in bed, eating chocolates and reading the newspaper, while his poor duck has to do all the work on the farm. One evening, the exhausted duck collapses in tears, to be comforted by chickens. The farm animals are very fond of the duck, and outraged by the farmer's behaviour, so they hatch a plan.

This engaging cross between Cinderella and George Orwell's Animal Farm, won the Smarties Book Prize, was British Book Awards Children's Illustrated Book of the Year and was also Highly Commended for the Kate Greenaway Medal. (Ages 4 to 8)--Lisa Gee

A Big Book edition is also available.

A sensitive story about exploitation which will be understood by the very youngest of children: downtrodden Duck works for gluttonous, lazy Farmer until his friends plan a rebellion on his behalf. The language is lyrical, the illustrations beautiful, and my children loved it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Happy childhood memories 13 Mar 2011
Format:Paperback
My mum bought this book for my brother when he was young as he was a great lover of ducks! I can remember sitting down to read it, one of his first words was "quack." Even now, as an adult of almost 27, my mum will telephone me and ask "How goes the work?"

This is a fantastic book, with catchy phrases, a great storyline and lovely pictures that children are sure to enjoy. It has certainly made it into my collection of happy childhood memories!

Let's face it; who wants to be discussing Hegelian dialectic with a three year old? This is a good way to introduce Marxism to the kids - or indeed anyone with a limited intellect... Read more

When I was a child I had this book and I think it is brilliant. It's very like a children's version of Animal Farm, which in my opinion is really good. Read more
