Book Description

12 Dec 2011
From keeping chickens to raising vegetables, the allure of farm life is permeating popular culture. Noted artist and illustrator Julia Rothman has caught the bug, and from her Brooklyn studio she offers "Farm Anatomy", an enticing visual guide to the parts and pieces of rural living. Dissecting everything from tractors, pigs, and sheep to fences, hay bales, crop rotation patterns, and tools, Rothman paints a richly entertaining and informative picture of life in the country. Readers will discover fascinating facts on every page, from the shapes of squash varieties to the parts of a goat; from how a barn is built to what makes up a beehive. Every corner of the barnyard is uncovered, revealing its own distinctive vocabulary and cultivating a new appreciation for the complexity of living close to the land. Known for her ability to communicate detailed information in a visual format, Rothman provides an irresistibly browsable book that will appeal to people of all ages. The practical and the curious combine in instructions for everything from making cheese to spinning wool.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book! 14 Nov 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Great book - beautifully designed and well written with lots of information of a value. I bought it for my 10-year old son who is going to live in the countryside in ten years time. ;-) It's a perfect buy not only for "village people", but for those who appreciate interesting and well managed ideas. Also for children in love with animals, plants, and machines.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful! 16 Oct 2011
By S. Schwarz - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I saw this book reviewed on a blog and instantly fell in love with the "comb styles" page featured. So I wanted to take a better look at the book to see if it was something that could be gifted this coming holiday season and was not disappointed. The illustrations were well done and the whole book was full of color. The biggest surprise was how my autistic 5-year-old son LOVED it! We laid in bed for an hour talking about the different parts of a farm, the plants and the animals. We did some counting, explored how a plant has roots and where chicken nuggets come from. I don't have coffee table books but this might make its way there to be enjoyed by the whole family.

5.0 out of 5 stars Family Favorite! 9 May 2012
By L. Farmer - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I came across this book on some blog recently and wanted to purchase it. Our family is about to move onto a farm and I thought it would be a good book to help us learn about all the things we don't know yet. The illustrations and short but detailed descriptions are wonderful. My 10 yr old son and 11 yr old daughter have enjoyed this as much as me. Even my husband likes it. It's quickly become a resource book in our home. A favorite and one I know will be enjoyed for years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Back to the Farm 10 Jun 2012
By R. Phillips - Published on
Richly illustrated, this book is easy, quick and fun to read yet packed with information that will help any townie enjoy a visit to the countryside. Want to know how to can tomatoes or bake bread? This book tells you. Want to know how to tell if a storm is coming by looking at the clouds overhead? This book tells you. Want to be able to identify common breeds of livestock as you zip along a country highway? This book tells you that too. Best of all, the book shows the extraordinary range of knowledge and skill that our farming ancestors applied in their everyday lives. Anyone who remembers a visit to their grandparents' farm will enjoy the memories brought back by Farm Anatomy.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great farm Primer 7 July 2012
By Diane - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a sweet little book that is a great reference for anybody interested in farmlife. There is no story here, just farm-connected information that some will find obvious, others esoteric -- candle making, parts of a pig, root cellaring, which chickens are 'egg' or 'meat' chickens, etc. Lots of fun stuff - if you are interested in farmlife. There are some neat recipes, too. For a NYC girl married to an authentic, knowledgable farm guy, Julia Rothman has done her homework, offering us exposure in a cursory way that is informative and full of charming illustrations.
