4.0 out of 5 stars An icon of cruising history., 27 Oct 2007
It isn't until you read that a great British tradition is to disappear that you start to appreciate how long it has been around and how it has become an accepted part of national consciousness.
This colourful and informative book looks at the history of the QEII from building to its approaching retirement. It does not set out to be a highly detailed account but rather a celebration of the ship's life. It is published particularly to commemorate the links between the Cunard line and Liverpool, where she has just made her penultimate visit.
There are some fascinating insights into the running of the ship, including, unusually and interestingly, details of the considerations that the Master and deck officers have to make in handling the vessel. There are references to her part in the Falklands war and her continuance of the great tradition of the Atlantic run, redolent of a more leisurely age of travel before the'hurry' of flying.
There are plenty of dramatic and impressive photographs of QEII together with all the facts & figures to satisfy the curious, from how many eggs are required to how much fuel is used!
This is a good souvenir to have as QEII approaches her paying-off. We are assured she will be in good hands as a floating resort in Dubai and that the arrangement will complement the maintenance of her predecessor,The Queen Elizabeth, in America.

5.0 out of 5 stars QE2 - Farewell Queen Of The Seas, 2 Oct 2008
By C. Reay (Doncaster, South Yorkshire, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a must for anyone who has ever sailed on QE2 or that has had an interest in the First Lady of the Sea. This is a well presented book with many black and white and colour photographs showing how the ship has changed over the years. It also features extensive profiles and interviews of past and present captains and of QE2's long serving Hotel Manager.

This is the perfect way to say 'Farewell' to a much loved and revered vessel that is fast approching the end of a very long, unique and distinguished career

1.0 out of 5 stars mistakes, 4 Feb 2009
By Clive H. Harvey - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
It is a pity that the first reviewer of this book cannot even get the name of the ship right. It is, after all there on the cover in big enough print. She was the Queen Elizabeth 2, known to many as QE2 - not QEII. And, for good measure it is the Queen Mary that is preserved in America (Long Beach, California) not the Queen Elizabeth.
Making such fundamental errors means that his review has little or no credibility.
