Book Description

Cassandra Blake has raised her three motherless sisters. The girls are the pride of their book-loving, impractical father, and not in a hurry to marry. Then the American Civil War cuts off supplies of cotton to Lancashire, the mills fall silent and there is no work. There is a stark choice: stay and risk starvation or pack up and begin again elsewhere. Cassandra has fallen in love with Reece Gregory, but he can't support a wife. When he's given the chance to start a new life in Western Australia, he seizes the opportunity, promising to send for her. Then an old feud tears the family apart. Cassandra is kidnapped and her sisters are forced to sail with a group of desperate cotton lasses to Fremantle. Penniless and alone, Cassandra is determined to find them again -- but when she is offered a way, there is a painful price to pay.

    More About the Author

Anna Jacobs grew up in Lancashire and emigrated to Australia, but still visits the UK regularly to see her family and do research, something she loves. She is addicted to writing and she figures she'll have to live to be 120 at least to tell all the stories that keep popping up in her imagination and nagging her to write them down. She's also addicted to her own hero, to whom she's been happily married for many years.

Anna also writes fantasy novels as Shannah Jay.

Another well written book by Anna Jacobs. I enjoy all her book and didn't want to put this one down until I finished it. Now I am waiting for the sequel to come out to find out what happened next. I can recommend this book especially to Anna Jacob's fans

4.0 out of 5 stars Another great story from Anna Jacobs 24 Aug. 2010
    Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I've just finished this one and like the other reviewer, I didn't want to put it down until I'd finished it. The only thing I would say is that it seemed to end pretty quickly, this is probably because there's another one to follow (maybe more, who knows?).

Anna Jacobs has written many 'sets' of books and they're all brilliant so I'm certain the Swan River Colony books are going to be just as good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Farewell to Lancashire - Anna Jacobs 26 Sept. 2012
    By Erin
Yesterday evening I picked up `Farewell to Lancashire' and read it cover-to-cover. Rather annoying, I'm busy at the moment and I had to start work at 4am today.

`Farewell to Lancashire' is the most gorgeous story. The novel is so empowering, for the reader, for the characters and the plot so rich. It's quite impossible to put down.

I'm quite sure there is something in the water in Western Australia that turns people like Anna Jacobs into authors. It couldn't be just skill and hard work, or they'd be all over the world.

A warning to those on a strict budget, Anna Jacobs is such a clever author she can actually manage to insert addictive advertisements for her next novel in the series, 'Beyond the Sunset' within the lines of her novel. We `poor' readers must run out and start to search knowing the novel is still several months from the bookshop.

3.0 out of 5 stars Anna Jacobs page binding error 18 Mar. 2012
I bought my wife the Anna Jacobs book "Farewell to Lancashire" in August 2010. She has only just got round to reading it and has found it very enjoyable until she got to page 405 where the book finishes prematurely halfway down the page. The next page ia half a page about the Author. The next page is an extract of a book "Beyond the Sunset". Then there is 3 pages of a Prologue and then the first 27 pages of this book.
It seems that the last pages of Farewell to Lancashire are missing from page 405 onwards. Please advise how this has happened.

5.0 out of 5 stars Farewell to Lancashire 4 Oct. 2010
Excellent!!!! Read this inside 3 days. I am an expatriat Lancastrian living in excile. My Mothers family where from Ashton / Oldham and Moss Side. Not only a good read but lots of interesting background about those tough times.

Read Beyond the Sunset - the sequel in a further 4 days now I have to wait 4 months for Destinys Path.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good historical insight 3 Nov. 2011
    By corolla
    Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Anna had obviously done her historical research on the Lancashire cotton industry (or lack of it) during the 19th century, but I found the storyline slightly trivialised. I bought this with the sequel Beyond the Sunset, and had the same opinion, this time of the Australian pioneering days.

    5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful read 30 May 2015
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The first book in the Swan River trilogy, it is about four sisters and their father living in Lancashire in the 1860s and who work in the mills. But the Civil War in America means the mills are closing down and times are hard. Throw in a bitter, vindictive aunt who hates the girls for no good reason and you have a riveting read.

What I particularly liked about this book and found quite fascinating was the lengths you had to go to travel anywhere. A flight to Australia today taking a day might seem long enough to us, but back then it involved at least a three month journey, with changes of ship as there was no direct route at that time. Add in the dangers if they ran into rough weather etc and it truly was life changing if you survived all that to get to the other side of the world.

Looking forward to reading the other books in the series.
