I only know that this book is very exciting, interesting and entertaining, and it contains the most beatiful love story. I have read it twice. I recommend it very much and also all the other books of this same author: Noel Barber.

Like all of Noel Barber's books, this one is unforgettable. His marvellous scope of World War 2 is fascinating and he must have been a marvellous and very knowledgeable man to know. I wish I could have known him. This book evokes a time when things were very different and people were actually fighting with their backs to the wall.
The story of the hero's time in France is so well drawn that you actually feel that you are there with him.
Barber is one of the best writers of this genre. Don't hesitate to read any of his book - you will be well rewarded, I know. If this is the first of his books you read I know you will want to read all his others.
The 'Daughters of the Prince', set in Italy during World War 2 is particularly excellent, as, I having been there many times and spoken to some of the older people who remember the war, can testify. His description of the battle at Monte Cassino is particularly good and it does make you wonder, if you visit there today, at the ingenuity of man in the marvellous restoration of that place.

I would definatly recommend this book, in fact I have to many people. It taught me about the effects of the 2nd World War on many different types of people. Who ever thinks about the feelings and lives of Champagne producers in France (unless you are one of course).
I have also read it many times and would do so again, as every time it captures my imagination and takes me to another world.
I have read all of his fictional novels and they have taught me about the effects that certain historical events have had on real people from all over the world.
Historical novels never date, so even though it was written some time ago now, its still amazing.
