Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Listening to Farewell To Fondle 'Em is like tuning into the coolest, most mysterious and uncompromising hip-hop radio station you've ever heard. With good reason, as it happens, since between 1994 and 2000 Fondle 'Em was the label run by noted New York hip-hop radio DJ Bobbito Garcia. Now, as he decides to wind up operations, the highlights of those releases have been gathered for this fine compilation. Given the presence of underground luminaries like Kool Keith, Juggaknots and former Company Flow leader El-P (whose own Def Jux imprint is behind this release), Farewell To Fondle 'Emis an effective survey of how these rappers and DJs built an alternative to the bling-bling-infatuated mainstream. But to imagine these 18 tracks only appeal as leftfield obscurities would be wrong. What's most apparent here is a love and respect for the traditional hip-hop arts: minimal funk loops and breakbeats underpinning playful and dextrous raps, often freestyles recorded for Bobbito's show. Check out the Jurassic 5-style interplay of The Arsonists, the slurred Wu-esque meditations of MF Doom, or the sex-and-ecstacy-addled Y@k Ballz for proof that hip-hop's secret history can be every bit as exciting as its mainstream heroes. --John Mulvey

5.0 out of 5 stars It's 4.5 stars, but regardless, you should buy it., 27 April 2002

If you've been sleeping, Bobbito Garcia's Fondle 'Em label was a great place for NYC-based hip-hop in the mid-to-late 90's. Featuring energetic, ridiculously talented MCs and producers, there were more than a few classics released on Fondle 'Em. Catch great moments from the Juggaknots, MF Grimm, MF Doom, The Cenobites (Kool Kieth and Godfather Don), The Arsonists, El-P, J-Treds, Binkis Records and more on this retrospective compilation. If you like fun, yet substantial hip-hop, with an East Coast slant, this album should be yours.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of Fondle Em', 19 Jun 2006

In 1995, Bobbito Garcia unknowingly started a legacy...a legacy of exceptional hip hop music that went against trends and paved the way for other independents like Rawkus, Stones Throw and Def Jux.
Great tracks are abundant on this record, as is their entire catalogue, but i will list my three favorites..

1.Widespread by Jakki tha Motamouth and Copywrite
2.Kick a Dope Verse by The Cenobites and Bobbito
3.I'm Gonna Kill You by The Juggaknots

5.0 out of 5 stars If your sleeping on this Compilation, you're really missing out, 15 Jun 2004

I must say this is one of the best compalation album's I have ever heard. I love hiphop/rap music, and have been listening to it since '96 and love all sorts of good stuff. I recommand this CD to anyone who likes COMPANY FLOW, THE WEATHERMEN, Or MF DOOM. This CD is packed with real hot beats and some real dope lyrics. It also has a little humor in it, which is always funny. The CD also includes a little story about DJ Cumcumber Slice aka Bobbito Garcia who had a radio station with Stretch Armstrong. All of the songs that are on this Album are published under Stretch and Bobbito's label, which both of them owned named Fondle 'Em. And that is where this CD got it's name if you didn't already know that. I think the best songs on the CD are The Cenonbites f/ Bobbito with "Kick a Dope Verse", and Yak Ballz with "Flossin". This CD is a perfect example of excellent underground sound. Blows away anything commercial. Go pick this up!
