Kattan... brings a first-hand immediacy to his Baghdad memoir which marks it out as a minor masterpiece of the genre... Shot through with an artless ardour which lingers long in the reader s mind. --'Sunday Telegraph'

Iraq s most distinguished Jewish writer-in-exile... The plight of Jewry is recorded in Farewell, Babylon in spare, elegiac tones... A vital book. --'Sunday Times'

Naim Kattan... tells of the last years in Baghdad, when Jews awaited the possibility and the permits to leave Iraq... also gives a poignant account of a young man seeking insight into the mysteries and joys of life in an inhibitory society. --'The Independent'

Farewell Babylon 9 Jan 2010
Format:Paperback
My family left Baghdad about 150 years ago. I find it facinating to see the social religious and cultural attitudes that are related in the book, transported to Calcutta India. a good read

Fairly Interesting 11 May 2009
By Mark Nenadov - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I found this title fairly interesting. It gives a good biographical look at a Jew living in Iraq. No "fireworks" or extremely dramatic stuff, just a good look at the human elements of the situation and some of the hardships encountered.

A creative writer trying to Inform didn't work 3 July 2011
By Casual Reader - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
The author disrupted an interesting and important topic that he is clearly knowledgeable of with his sexual experiences [maybe the theme - Coming to Age?] and his writing style reminded me of a poet trying to write history and embellishing the issues so much that we can not simply enjoy and learn of his experiences.
