Well, actually one of the two most disappointing, the other being The Seige of Eternity. Almost any episode of Star Trek gives more background and culture on its alien species that Pohl does in an entire novel.

His "Eshcaton" idea was done far better by the "Cities in Space" series of many years ago.

All in all, a waste of good reading time.

OK but not great 24 Nov 2008

I enjoyed the series and it seemed to me Pohl made a more realistic view of humanities response to an alien invasion than most scifi books (ie the endless bickering in the United nations rather than fighting together). However like one of the other reviewers I felt the ending seemed incredibly rushed and disapointing. You felt Pohl just got bored and wanted to finish the book.

This is a very entertaining book. Lots of action and weird and wonderful characters, both alien and human copies. The images painted are imaginative, yet logical. My only minor compaint is that the ending seems a little rushed and too convenient. But overall this is an easy read, a good provocative sci-fi adventure.
