From Amazon.co.uk

Far North is a chilling film from Asif Kapadia (Senna, The Warrior). Set in the vast and remote landscape of the Arctic, it tells a beautiful, shocking story of survival and revenge. Against her instincts, a woman, Saiva (played by Michelle Yeoh: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), rescues a wounded stranger (Sean Bean: Lord of the Rings trilogy) from the ice and nurses him back to health with the help of the young and stunning Anja. The two women compete for the man’s affection, only to become embroiled in a heated love triangle. Shot with precision under treacherous conditions, the fi lm shows the universal longing for love and connection, amid the hardships of arctic life. With an original score to match the intensity of the images, Far North delves deep into a world of myth, love, scorn, deceit and, ultimately, the overwhelming force of nature.

Product Description

Thriller set in the desolate Arctic tundra, based on a short story by Sara Maitland. Saiva (Michelle Yeoh) is a woman who has lived her life under a curse put upon her at birth. She and Anja (Michelle Krusiec), her beautiful adopted daughter, are the sole survivors of an indigenous tribe of reindeer herders slaughtered by a troop of marauding soldiers, and they struggle to survive on the scarce prey they can kill. When Saiva finds an injured and starving soldier, Loki (Sean Bean), who is also on the run from the marauding band, she takes him in and the two women nurse him back to health as the long winter nights draw in. But when Loki and Anja grow close and start to fall in love, devastating consequences lie in store for all three.

5.0 out of 5 stars Experiences pushed to the extreme 18 Oct 2012

This is an unusual movie. The drama is played by only three actors and one might expect to look at a piece of theatre. Far from it! The narrative and the description of their emotional evolution over time is of dense fabric. It displays three portraits of different human experiences. These experiences are positioned on the edge of what the human animal could or could not endure if excluded by a "normal" given society. In this drama all of protagonists are isolated in hostile landscape, they are chilled by memories and yet long for human fulfilment once they meet. The tension is kept right to the very end and instead of being shocked by the outcome of this thriller, one feels sadness and fondness for each one of the caracters. The acting is very fine and the photography of the arctic environment is breath-taking.

The bonus contains a beautiful sequence on polar bears.

We found this film watchable, different, and interesting - until the Grand Finale, when the senior woman does a Hannibal Lecter on her younger companion......
