Product Description

When Georgiana Gregory and her maid, Kitty, make the long sea journey from their native Hull for New York, they are expecting to begin a new life in the heady freedom of the newly-formed United States of America. Georgiana wants to escape from the confines of English life, and to savour a land of emancipation and opportunity. But in New York, she encounters a man passing himself off as her brother-in-law Edward Newmarch, a local mill-owner’s son who has abandoned Georgiana’s sister and fled to America. Georgiana recognises the man standing before her as Edward Newmarch’s valet Robert Allen – Edward himself appears to have vanished.

But Edward, having escaped from a disastrous marriage in England, is now in further trouble with women, having agreed to marry the difficult daughter of a powerful landowner and businessman, while pursuing his beautiful wife Sofia. As Georgiana and Kitty pursue the adventures of the frontier, and Edward tries to flee his enemies, the dangers of this new country seem too much to cope with.

From the Back Cover

When Georgiana and her maid, Kitty, make the long sea journey from their native East Yorkshire to America, they are seeking a new life of freedom and emancipation. But in New York Georgiana encounters a man passing himself off as her brother-in-law Edward Newmarch, a local mill-owner's son who has abandoned her sister and fled to America. Edward himself seems to have vanished.

Meanwhile Edward, having escaped from a disastrous marriage in England, is now running from a bigamous union with the daughter of a wealthy plantation owner. His flight takes him through the Mississippi swamps, across arid desert and mountain ranges towards the gold fields of California. As Georgiana and Kitty journey to the land of the Iroquois and the hidden valley of gold mines, and Edward tries to flee his enemies, the dangers and passions of this new country and its people threaten to overwhelm them all. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This book is a sort of follow on from the exellent Doorstep girls but it follows the lifes of Georgiana and Kitty and also Edward Newmarch as they make new lives for themselves in America.

Georgiana longs for equality and fought for womens rights in England and as she begins her exciting and sometimes dangerous journey across parts of America she realizes that she has finally got the equality she has wanted. Meeting lots of interesting people on the way including Indians one of whom becomes more involved with her then he thought he would.

Edward on the other hand does not fair so well and spends a great deal of his time on the run. The way their storys mingle then finally come together is brilliant with Edward finally mending his ways and georgiana taking care of his child.

Then in the last few chapters when georgiana and edwards daughter jewel visit Hull we get to visit the old characters and catch up the lives of Ruby and Grace. This book is fantasic and although Valerie writes brilliantly about Hull it was nice to be taken to somewhere new where you could very easily imagine the new world of America
