3.0 out of 5 stars Great gameworld, shallow gameplay 22 April 2010
Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
This is a difficult game to review: the production values are "through the roof", the graphics are excellent, the game world, an idealized version of an African state, is beautifully designed and rendered. The game interface is excellent: almost no HUD elements distract from the game, things like a map or healing items are represented in the game scene itself.

However, playing the game itself feels somewhat... shallow. There's no way of interacting with the gameworld's inhabitants instead of shooting them. Constantly and repeatedly. There are no civilians, and except for the "buddies", every character is an enemy. As a minor niggle, the shooting experience itself is inferior and unrealistic. Bullets travel in a straight line and instantaneous - this takes away all the challenge from sniping, and feels like a step back after playing titles such as STALKER or ArmA.

As a last note, the "feeling" of the original Far Cry has been captured and re-created surprisingly well. The graphics style and rendering techniques are very alike, and the gunplay, the wide open spaces and vehicle handling all harken back to the first game.

1.0 out of 5 stars Broken by bugs 11 Sept. 2010
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
This game could have been great, but the game-breaking bugs say otherwise. I for one found the game progress broke at 44% and after 20 hours of attempting replays of various bits, workarounds etc I found it just does not want to keep going and there's no more missions for me to take until the last on I took is marked "Complete".
I rescued the darn woman - she's now stood there in the bar happily chatting away!

Other people got even further and their game broke at 88% which must have been even more frustrating. The worst part is that the Devs seemed never to be interested in fixing this, content instead with planning "harder modes" and FC3.

This could have been a 4 or even 5 Star review but instead I can only rate it 1.

Great graphics with realistic explosions and a real feeling of what a hot parched landscape would be like.
However, unfortunately the game is seriously flawed in many respects!
To list a few:
Lorries that have no more damage creating properties than a lightweight car,
No inhabitants other than homicidal enemies who incidentally keep re-spawning as soon as you get a couple of hundred yards away from cleaning out a camp,
Enemy vehicles which are always faster than yours,
Some weapons are completely useless such as the mortar except when the enemy has one, then they can fire at you with incredible accuracy from hundreds of yards away even if you are completely hidden from them and have moved,
Some of the diamond cases are not accessible,
What appears to be a completely free-roaming environment is in fact exceptionally linear with a mid game point where it is impossible to win in either of the 2 scenarios allowed and at the end of the game you are forced to choose between 2 scenarios both of which end up with you getting killed.
Not possible to choose which of the 2 war-ing factions to help - the game controls your desiny,
Continual cut-scenes throughout,
A serious bug that won't allow guns in emplacements or those attached to vehicles to be released,
Weapons being restricted by the gun shop (as if),
Weapons that wear out really quickly and jam even if they are nearly new,
Sorry but this could have been great like the original Farcry, but this is just frustrating nonsense!

Although the open world can get repetitive after a while and the whole "take your pills before bed" thing can get annoying, the game is rock solid.
Shooting feels really good, with great meaty sounds for weapons that range from silenced pistols to rpg.
The inherent freedom that comes with the open world is really refreshing as you can complete missions how you want, and when you want.
Vehicles are also a good mix between arcade and simulation giving you fast car travel and slippery tight turns in your car/truck/boat.
Enemies flank you! And they use grenades while flanking you! It's really great to see this actually work in a game.
Stealth works and it's highly enjoyable. Sneaking through bushes never gets old because of the threat of detection and the overall captivating atmosphere conveyed by sound and realistic environments.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great looks, poorly programmed, very repetitive. 21 Mar. 2010
Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
The game is great looking if you have the pc to go with it, but playing the dx10 version makes your game crash every hour or so because of some kind of memory leak.
The other problem is that the game feels very repetitive and even though your playing in a big world, it doesn't really feel that big.

4.0 out of 5 stars FC2 Impressions 6 July 2012

Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
In summary - Great graphics and good game action. Yes, there is repetition throughout and your enemies are sometimes very difficult to spot, even when they are shooting at you but you are permitted to save yourself by hypodermic injection. Use of the hand held mapping device is a must to locate Objectives, Targets, ammo dumps and health top ups. Niggling parts are being hit by an enemy, even when under cover and at long range and when the baddie is pointing away from you. The main thing is that the game is entertaining and with the great graphics fun to drive the various vehicles through the undergrowth smashing into trees with harming your own body. A final point is that there appears to be a bug in the game that causes it to crash without warning. It has not been rectified, as far as I can read on the Internet, so 'quick save' often, just in case. Enjoy at the cheap price.
