Consistent. 13 Jan 2003
By Dr Nick VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
This is Ten's seventh album! Following the epic "Babylon", Ten have returned to the powerful riffs of "Spellbound", but built on the lighter feel of "Babylon".
The arrangements are also a bit more straightforward than on Babylon, especially in the intro department (some of the numbers on Babylon took ages to get to the point!).
There are two ballads on the album, What About Me? and the title track, both of high standard as usual.

And there is also some spectacular rocking; Glimmer of Evil has an excellent riff and a good chorus which isn't too overwhelming.
High Tide is HEAVY, reined in by the calm vocal delivery.
Last Of The Lovers is another rocker, with a great chorus.
Heart Like A Lion is a bit different, starting quite moody with a Neil Schon-ish guitar melody, but when the chorus arrives, things become much more lively and heavy. This song also boasts a fantastic guitar break, certainly the best produced from the gutar point of view.

Which brings me to the whingy bit. I WISH somebody would turn Vinny Burns' guitar up a bit more for the solos. He's a world class guitarist, and when he is audible he's a joy to listen to. But you can't always hear him properly.
He played some great stuff on "The Robe" (3rd album), but dodgy production marred the whole experience.
"Babylon" was much better produced, but you still have to listen out for him - he plays throughout some of the songs, but it's buried.
And here we are again!!! He's there in the mix, but not nearly prominent enough, and it's a shame and a waste. Hence the loss of a star.

He's now left the band and been replaced by a young prodigy. Hopefully he'll fare better!

But it's still a great melodic rock CD. Get it.

Another great album 11 Oct 2004
By Tramps like us VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Ten are one of my favourite bands.
A great vocalist, intelligent lyrics, stunning guitars and a production to die for.
I cannot praise them highly enough.
If you buy this I guarantee you you will be humming the chorus of "Outlawed and notorious" after the first play. This truly is a wonderful album.
But hey - don't stop with this one - buy the lot and you will not be disappointed !!

Back to the debut 9 Dec 2003
By M. Amos
Format:Audio CD
FBTW was destined to be guitarist Vinny Burns swansong with the band, so this is the last of the classic string of Ten albums. Replacement Chris Franscis shows promise judging by his performances on the side project "Once And Future King".

Production wise, this album has more of a modern feel with louder drums and a clearer edge of guitar distortion. On the song front I feel this is a workman like effort compared to previous albums, all of which have been completely inspired. Great songs still abound (the melodic title track echoes Queen), but there are weaker moments, particularly "Who Do You Want To Love" which is a bit cheesy.

The fantasy material has been eschewed, probably in a bid to boost sales, but fans of Gary Hughes' epics have not been disappointed for long following the release of the spectacular Arthurian "Once And Future King" concept albums.

Like the debut album "X", FBTW is straight ahead AOR.
