5.0 out of 5 stars Canada's answer to Blondie ROCKS!, 7 Aug 2002

Mr. J. E. B. Anness "James Anness" (Essex, UK) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Far Away in Time (Audio CD)
Most music fans in Britain and most listeners to FM commercial radio over the past 20 years or so will be famliar with Vancouver's Martha and the Muffins through their only British hit 'Echo Beach'.

This was a catchy and original New Wave offering which sounds as good as it did in 1980 as it does today. I was interested to find a compilation album listed on Amazon of the first three albums, 'Metro Music', 'Trance' and 'This is the Ice Age'. I purchased it expecting that the tracks on the album, which I hadn't heard (all but 'Echo Beach') would be up to the same standard. I was not disappointed. One thing that struck me listening to the songs I hadn't heard was that they were both as catchy as 'Blondie' (who I love), but more accessible than the New Yorkers on the first listen. Perhaps this is physchological due to the band being from the Commonwealth and having a British producer and consequently a sound similar to 'Pretenders'. This album is the first one I have listened to all the way through for a long time as it is so accessable. Martha Ladly has a pleasant, listenable style and I enjoy the way the sax and organ have been used as lead instruments on some tracks as well as guitars. The songs have a no nonsense feel which makes them simple but effective, and very little dated in the present music climate.

The songs are original, especially 'Insect Love' (Interspecies romance, anyone?) and the cover of 'Motorbikin'' is well done. Buy this album and get turned on to a great band that was unfairly passed over, and really needs to be appreciated today. The only fault is that the liner notes should have some more information for budding M+M fans like myself. Recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great album, don't miss it., 11 April 2010

This review is from: Far Away in Time (Audio CD)
This album that I brought as a download comprises of the entire Metro Music album in a well mastered version together with tracks from the currently unavailable Living In The Ice Age album.
This can be recommended to all 'New Wave' fans of all ages for the melodic but passionate playing being more than just rewrites of Echo Beach.
It is cheaper than the straight downloaded remaster of Metro Music too (shh).

4.0 out of 5 stars About insomnia, 18 Jun 2008
This review is from: Far Away in Time (Audio CD)
This album is worth buying for 'about insomnia' alone, a track which I fell in love with back in the eighties when it was a single that mystifyingly flopped. I consider it a better song than echo beach which in itself is a great track.
