Book Description

Following in the tradition of Ghost Rider and Traveling Music, Rush drummer Neil Peart relates nearly four years of band tours, road trips, and personal discoveries in this introspective travelogue. From the ups and downs of a professional artist to the birth of a child, this revealing narrative recounts 22 adventures from rock’s foremost drummer, biker enthusiast, husband and father. Both playful and insightful, Peart’s love of drumming and the open road weaves throughout the stories as Neil explores horizons that are both physical and spiritual, sharing his observations about nature, society, and the self. Full-color photos round-out this tour of the open road that will resonate with Rush fans and motorcycle enthusiasts alike.

"Peart's fluidity and immense analytical perception certainly remind me of some other writers whose capable hands can effortlessly mix narrative and description without losing rhythm. In Neil Peart's case he can perform miracles in both realms." on Traveling Music

3.0 out of 5 stars Far and Away 7 July 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is the third of Peart's 'road' books that I have read, the others being Roadshow and Travelling Music. If you enjoyed either of those, you will enjoy this one. The insights he gives into his experiences riding his BMW motorcycle between Rush tour dates across Europe and the US provide an alternative view of life on the road as a rock 'n' roll drummer. There are interesting asides that offer glimpses into drum lessons with Pete Erskine and Freddie Gruber, his home life, the birth of his daughter and his general philosophies on life, nature and the environment. There are some anecdotes for the drum obsessed Rush fans but, for the most part, this is a travel book detailing what it may be like to ride tens of thousands of miles in many different terrains, staying at different hotels every night, and muddling through.

Its strength? It continues in the vein of his earlier works as he shares his adventures and those of his travelling companions.

Its weakness? It continues in the vein of his earlier works as he shares his adventures and those of his travelling companions.

5.0 out of 5 stars For non Motorcyclists . . . 11 Feb. 2015
By Liz
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Please do not think that this book is written for the appreciation of motorcyclists only. It is not and as a 'non' motorcyclist I could not put this book down. Superbly written and if you are not a fan of Rush, you soon will be just from reading Neil Peart's philosophies about the world around him which is conveyed in his lyrics.
A brilliant read.

Far and Away shows how Neil Peart's writing is developing and exploring new boundaries. His writing is tight and expressive while evoking powerful mental images of the places he has been and the things he experiences. Well done Mr Peart. Keep up the great work.

This is the style of writing that takes the reader on the trip, I find Neals writing informative, funny at times and sad at others. He comes across as highly intelligent with his insight on prose and flaura and fauna.
