Pierre Souvestre and Marcel Allain created Fantomas in 1911, and the character would appear in something like 30 plus novels, he also appeared in the cinema (the silent movies are really good
Fantômas [DVD] [1913]), on tv and even in comicbooks. Popular with the general reader Fantomas was also admired by the avant-garde movement as well as the surrealists, showing that he has a lot to offer.
So who is Fantomas? In this novel alone he kills an English lord and stuffs his corpse in a trunk, slits the throat of an old lady and pushes a potential witness from a speeding train. On top of those nefarious crimes he manages to steal monies and jewels etc. Fantomas may be a master of disguise and an arch villain but he has his nemesis, in the body of Juve the French police's answer to Sherlock Holmes. With Juve hot on the trail it can only be a matter of time before Fantomas is captured. But like all great villains Fantomas seems to appear at will, representing a different persona to different persons, almost like some spirit. Even when he is captured you know that he will cheat death and someone else is executed by the guillotine.
Arguably this novel and its followers are the beginning of the modern pulp crime novel genre, with its lurid details and crimes being committed. In France there has been a tradition of anti-hero crime novels going back to at least the real life Vidocq. With an arch villain that manages to escape leaving the police always one step behind it is no wonder that Fantomas was a success on its first publication, and that it is still read today. My only question is, this is the first novel, will there be made available any more of these books in English?
