Product Description

Manufacturer's Description
The Union Aerospace Corporation, an arm of the most powerful conglomerate on Earth, was performing secret experiments in their base on Mars. Tapping into the very fabric of the universe itself, UAC scientists made discoveries that would forever change human existence.

Then something went terribly wrong...

With Doom: the Boardgame, Fantasy Flight Games brings one of the most famous computer games of all time to the tabletop. Marine players explore darkened corridors and rooms battling imps, hell knights, archviles, and other classic DOOM® monsters, while the Monster player tries to bring them down using the legion of horrors at his command. Doom: The Boardgame includes more than 60 finely detailed plastic miniatures, the largest of which stands approximately 80mm tall, and features weapons, monsters, and graphics taken from the best-selling DOOM 3 computer game.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best fantasy boardgames ever, and surprisingly faithful to videogame, 20 Aug 2006
By Mr. A. T. Whitaker - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
From iD software, who brought you the famous DOOM videogame series, in which you played a marine who had to shoot his way through various missions and solve some puzzles, comes a boardgame based on that famous scary series (or, more specifically, based on DOOM 3).

2-4 players play, with one playing the alien invaders and the other(s) playing marines. The invader player sets up visible sections of the play area using jigsaw-style interlocking floor pieces, doors, obstacles and any visible equipment tokens (more about that later) as per the Scenario Guide, which contains the layouts and secrets of five missions (which can be played individually or as a continuous campaign), with a 'TO BE CONTINUED...' at the end, partially because the Fantasy Flight Games official website may contain more scenarios to download and use, and partially because as I write this an Expansion Set has just been released.

The Marine players actually co-operate in this game, and can even help each other out if they move next to each other and, for example, give more powerful weapons and ammo that they have gained to those who are struggling. The three Marines are different colours (red, green and blue), which is also important to the Invader player because sometimes an invader can only be placed on a map if the Marine of that icon's colour is on the Scenario map (this'll make sense to those that have actually played this game, so don't worry!), and even then only if there is enough of that particular alien not currently on the board.

Each Marine always starts with three basic weapons: the fist (no ammo required, but only recommended if you cannot use any other weapons), the pistol (plus two relevant Shells/Bullets ammo tokens) and grenades (but these can only be used once a Rockets/Grenades ammo token has been picked up). More can be picked up on the board by walking over the weapon tokens lying around. The other weapons you may find are the Machine Gun, Chainsaw (a more-powerful hand-to-hand combat weapon that requires no ammo, so is a far better alternative to the Fist), Shotgun, Chain-Gun, Rocket-Launcher, Plasma Gun and the hard-to-find BFG (the ultimate weapon!) -- many of the weapons have various special abilities, too (e.g. blast radii for explosive weapons). Various Ammo tokens (the aforementioned two and Energy Cell Ammo) and Health Tokens (restores three lost Wound Tokens when collected) similarly lie around, as well as Adrenaline Tokens and the Berserk Mode (you can only attack with the Fist, but a successful hit will kill your foe INSTANTLY; it only lasts for 2 turns, though).

Each Marine also starts with 10 Wound Tokens; these deplete as the Marines get hit in combat, and when the last Wound Token is gone, the Marine is 'fragged' and next turn must restart near to his point of death. Marines also start with two or three Marine Cards (that permanently affect his abilities during play and may even help him on his mission) and two Armour tokens.

All combat (firing or hand-to-hand [or 'melee' as the game calls it]) is done via six dice (though depending on the weapon or Invader in use not all the dice are always used). The dice have numbers on for weapon range, some of the sides have bullet-hole markers (for every number of bullet-holes matching up to the defender's armour rating they suffer one Wound e.g. five bullet-holes against a foe with Armour rating 2 would cause the foe to suffer two Wounds, with the fifth bullet-hole being wasted) and some of the sides have a bullet icon (if a Marine rolls and at least one die has a bullet icon showing then he must discard one of that particular type of ammo for the weapon he was using).

Once each of the Marine players have had their turn the Invader draws an Invader card and moves and/or attacks with any or all of the evil invader characters on the board, as he tries to get the Scenario's required number of 'frags' to win (usually about six). Foes range from basic Zombies through to bigger ones like Demons and the Mancubus, through to the almighty Cyberdemon! The detail on the miniatures is incredible.

I can't go into too much depth in this review, but what they have done to bring DOOM from the computer screen to the table is quite incredible. It's a lot of fun, surprisingly tense at times (especially when die-rolling is going on) and pretty challenging. Try it!
