Product Description

They were best friends, driven by one shared vision - to rule the world of virtual reality games. Cill, hard-edged and beautiful, Var and Benny, brains and business acumen, and Bart, the genius behind the idea. Their newest invention, developed to transport the player into a fantastical virtual world, is just about to be launched. Then, suddenly, Bart is found brutally killed, defeated by their own game. Their close-knit group is torn apart. Who could have engineered a virtual death with such devastating consequences? Even Eve Dallas, New York City's most cunning investigator, is hard-pressed for an answer. But as she digs deeper, peeling back layers of secrets, revenge and misplaced allegiances, she realises with growing dread the depth of the killer's master plan. And she knows his game is far from over...

When Bart Minnock, co-owner of a popular video game firm, is found brutally murdered Eve Dallas takes the case. And it's not an easy one for Eve.
Bart seemed to be a great, happy guy that nobody had trouble with. But finding a motive is not the only problem for Eve. Another is to find out how Bart was decapitated without anybody else in the room.
Eve must get past her own convictions about what is possible in the real world to close this case and find justice for Bart.

What I love about "Fantasy in Death" is that it concentrates on friendship. So there are lots of interactions between Eve and her colleagues, especially Peabody and Nadine. The scenes between Nadine and Eve are awesome and I like how the dynamics in their friendship are portrayed.
I was relieved that the new case is not so dark and hard to read like the ones in "Kindred in Death".
Another thing I love about "Fantasy in Death" is that this time Eve is the strong one in the relationship with Roarke. Roarke has some trouble to deal with the case because he knew the victim but Eve is there for him just like he is always there for her. It's awesome to see how she handles the fights with him and is understanding even when he hits her below the belt (for once Roarke is not 100% perfect!). But of course there are also some sexy and very sweet scenes between Eve and Roarke and whenever I read about them as a pair I'm just happy.
The mystery part of the story was very interesting and I didn't know who the bad guy was until it was revealed.

So, "Fantasy in Death" is another awesome book by J.D. Robb and I'm already excited to read "Indulgence in Death", coming in November 2010.

Excellant story. Not as dark and grim as some of the others in the series, despite the fact that the poor victim is decapitated. I think that the product description above gives rather too much away.

Here you have 4 young friends and business partners. All owners of a fledgling e-game company. 3 of them, Bart the business and e-genius, Cill the organisational and e-expert and Benny, the research and e-genius, have all known each other since childhood. They meet and link up with Var, Marketing and e-genius at university. Roarke meets Bart at a conference and immediately wants to recruit him, but Bart and his friends want their own business, so Roarke gives them advice and helps them. Of the 4, Bart is the overall genius and front-guy of the team. Nice, easy going, well-liked by everyone. So who then would want to decapitate him and how was it done? That is the problem for Eve.

Bart's apartment has security inside and out tighter than Fort Knox. Both the doorman and security disks are adament that no-one went into the apartment with Bart, or arrived after him. So how did the killer get in and why was nice guy Bart killed? Here Eve is out of her depth. She is no e-geek. So she has to rely on Roarke, Feeney and McNab. However, all security systems indicate that Bart was the only one there and was the only person playing the new,in-development game. However, Bart's security system on his computer destroys the game disc when the police e-team try and remove it from the computer.

Then the killer goes after another of the partners.

I did actually have some vague idea after a few chapters who the killer might be and this grew as the book progressed, as a few clues are dropped here and there. However, although I also had an idea of how the murder and attempt might have been done, I couldn't figure out the details of exactly how, as it seemed too Fantastical! Excellant read, which holds you well throughout.

First Sentence: While swords of lightning slashed and stabbed murderously across the scarred shield of sky, Bart Minnock whistled his way home for the last time.

U-Play is a fast-rising gaming company with a quartet of co-owners. One of them takes the disk home for a game in development, and literally loses his head over it. Lt. Eve Dallas is faced with a locked-room mystery where she and her team have to find out not only who did it, but how it was done.

Reading Robb has always been one of my guilty pleasures. I enjoy her voice and her humor. Only Robb can write a conversation about private parts that is neither silly, salacious or scatological, but is laugh-out-loud funny. She has such a wonderful ear for dialogue and banter. I appreciated her references to books, literature, television and movies, including a delightful homage to "The Godfather."

She also does a very good creating life in 2060; the not-too-distant future. It's a tricky balance of making it seem possible but not fantastical..."It's always fiction until science catches up."

The focus of this book was relationships; friends, partners, lovers. It is nice watching Eve develop emotionally with each book and the sexual relationship with Roark, while still there, be less prominent. The usual supporting relationships were all there in a more cameo role than in the past, but they contributed to the theme.

Where the book fell apart a bit, for me, was the plot. It started off really well as a locked-room mystery. There were viable suspects and some good red herrings. However, because of the type of crime, it didn't quite make sense that Eve was the one who came up with the solution; the logic, perhaps, but not the technicality. The final climatic scene seemed abrupt and over the top.

I did enjoyed the book, do still enjoy the series and know I'll continue reading it, but would like to see Robb/Roberts change it up a bit.
