Technically excellent Blu-ray, flat film for Fantastic Mr Fox
on 27 March 2010
Technically this Blu-ray is excellent. The picture transfer is exceptionally strong, revealing all the fine details of the models and the animation approach. The HD audio is good too - the voice actors are clear, the sound is strong and it's pleasurable to listen to. Overall if you like the film, the Blu-ray is absolutely fine.
Sadly, I found the film rather flat. To my taste, the characters lacked personality and while I liked the overall arc and the modern resonances of the story, the film never really drew me in. By about 30 minutes I was checking my watch and by about 60 minutes I was fast-forwarding to the end. I usually enjoy computer and stop-frame animation films a great deal, so this surprised me - especially as I knew nothing about the film before watching it and really did approach it with an open mind.
Still, children will enjoy it (although do be aware there are some 'scary' moments for the really younger ones). I also do applaud the technique and approach for the film. It really is novel and fresh against the background of so many computer generated films.
In summary, if you like the film or the director's previous work I'd give it 4.5/5. To my taste, the film lacked anything to make it really stand out or be memorable, so my personal score is 2/5.
