Amazon.co.uk Review

Offering a real improvement on its predecessor and successfully introducing one of the world of comics’ most popular characters in the process, Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer easily warrants some attention on DVD to go with its impressive box office take.

Picking up where the surprisingly tepid original left off, Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer finds the Marvel Comics Universe’s first family dealing with the celebrity that their powers have brought them, to the point where even a simple wedding can’t take place without interruption.

The film then takes a little while to re-establish its characters and re-introduce some of the issues that underpin them. But it’s not too long before the Silver Surfer arrives, and things really get into gear. For make no mistake: it’s the Surfer who ignites the film and provides some of the very best moments of Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer. Backed up by some superb special effects work, he’s a far more interesting draw that the returning Julian McMahon as Dr Doom.

While there are, inevitably, various problems that each of the characters in Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer must face, the film never opts to go knee-deep into them. Instead, it chooses a light, breezy tone, that’s suited well to family viewing yet not without some genuine blockbuster moments.

It’s no classic, but Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer is most certainly fun. And it’s equally certain that this isn’t the last we’ve seen of this quintet of heroes... --Jon Foster

Rise of the Silver Surfer has great special effects but after that its really just candy floss. The plot despite being based on the Marvel comics original storyline fails to get going; the actors are generally quite wooden throughout although mostly nice to look at they're never going to win an oscar and when you compare this to Spiderman for example you just wonder why a little more time and effort wasn't put into the writing. But the Silver surfer is very cool and is realised extremely well and its could have been much worse. I really wanted to like this more but it just wasn't going to happen

The story of the second FF chapter is mediocre for the Silver Surfer fans and considering the scenario possibilities the producers had, the cinematographic end-product is quite poor.
One of the reasons I got this version on BLU RAY was the hype about its technical merits. I don't know if this version (UK release) was produced by a matrix different than the US release, but it leaves a lot o things to be desired !! Although the audio is very good, the colors in many scenes are unnaturally saturated and the picture is too grainy with evident noise, something we should not have for a film produced in 2007. If I had an easy option I would return the disk for lack of satisfaction .

I went to see this movie with my old man. We're both comics geeks and we had a blast. OK, so it's not the best film ever made. We both laughed in the right places, got sucked into the story and thought the CGI action finale was a satisfying conclusion. From a comics point of view the story leaves out the campest elements from the original 60's story (so no purple clad giant Galactus) but it works in key moments from some classic issues, including Dr Doom nicking the surfers board.

Did I mention this is 100 times better then the first FF movie?

Come to think of it, I liked this film a lot better then Spiderman 3.
Kids will enjoy this film, not because they are dumb but because children are better at accepting things for what they. Leave the moany critics to complain about what this movie isn't and just enjoy it for the fun family adventure that it is.
