This is a splendidly bound retrospective of the Fantastic Four, but for whom it is this substantial book intended? It is very expensive and of the content dates back over 40 years. It seems likely this is for readers of those comics back in the 1960s who like this reviewer are now middle aged. Is it worth the money and is it a good buy?

Looking first at practical matters, it is well put together, contains more than 800 pages and the reproduction of the original comics is excellent. The colours are vibrant and the whole package is high quality. Though bulky it is readable.

Pros and cons:

Pros:

1. A wonderful exercise in nostalgia, with the original stories printed in full complete with covers and letters pages. This reviewer was twelve years old again.

2.Contains some of the seminal Fantastic Four stories, the Galactus trilogy the Inhumans the Black Panther and of course more than one helping of Dr Doom.

3.Some superb Jack Kirby artwork, particularly when Joe Sinnott is the Inker.

Cons:

1.These stories are from the 1960s and it shows.

2.It is surprising how the standard of inking varies, some of the earlier stories particularly where inked by Vince Colletta look surprisingly shoddy, and the contrast between that and the later stories is noticeable.

3.The dialogue is very cheesy, but perhaps this reviewer is too critical and of course is no longer a child,

4.The standard of scripting does vary. However there is no doubt that when one reaches the Inhumans saga, through Galactus, and "This Man This Monster"a high point is reached, the stories before and after are not quite to the same standard .

5.

This was at the top of my Christmas list when I knew this second volume of the Fantastic Four was being re-issued. I couldn't afford it the first time and then people started asking silly money for it. Now I have my copy and it is superb. This includes the brilliant Inhumans saga and is one of the best in the whole history of comics. Also appearing for the first time is the Silver Surfer and the Black Panther is also highlighted. Art by Jack Kirby - what more could you want? A must-have for any serious comic fan of yesteryear.

THE WORLD'S GREATEST COMIC MAGAZINE! 3 July 2007
By L. Friesen - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
Well here we have it, the second FF Omnibus. This behemoth contains the following: FF 31-60, Annual 2-4 & Not Brand Echh 1.I know alot of people will wonder about binding and printing quality, and I've got to say my copy is excellant in both regards. I don't think you can beat this price either, I would get one while you can as you should know they'll be out of print soon. That's about it, you know if you want one of these or not, and I would wager you could do a lot worse than having this edition. Get'em while you can...

Absolutely Fantastic! 23 Aug 2007
By R. Gale - Published on Amazon.com

Marvel has done an outstanding job in the reproduction of this volume. Kirby's artwork looks terrific, and the slightly-larger-than-Masterworks size really enhances everything. In fact, if you already have the Masterworks editions of these stories, you'll want to sell them because they look so much better here. If you're an FF fan, this volume is a must have. If you're newer to the FF, these are the stories that truly defined this group, epic and operatic, showcasing Stan Lee and Jack Kirby at their very best. And it's a lot of fun to have the letters pages reproduced along with the stories. Some nice essays finish out the package. Highly recommended!

Fantastic Printing! 12 July 2007
By T. Martin - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
This is my second Marvel Omnibus that I bought from Amazon. My first was the Uncanny X-Men Omnibus. The first thing I noticed with this book while flipping through the pages is that it seems to be printed on heavier paper stock than the X-Men Omnibus. This definitely adds to the Quality of the book. Also, the colors are very bright and vivid and look great. Overall, it's very nice to have, especially with the awesome variant cover.

Unmissable 4 Jan 2008
By jmm - Published on Amazon.com

I don't know what the people at Marvel did exactly, I guess they went and found a different source from where to film and print, but most of the issues included here look INCREDIBLY better than their poor, xerox-like badly restored Masterworks counterpart.

If you already own the Masterworks for this part of the 4F run, you'll feel cheated and will want to throw them away, believe me, reproduction quality improvement is THAT big.

On the other hand, binding is poor for such a mammoth of a book, and, contrary to popular opinion, I wish size was the same as the original books when they were published for the first time, as it should be for an archival edition.

Fantabulous compilation 2 Sep 2007
By Bruno Simon Rodriguez - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
Well, even though I think this summer FF blockbuster is a nice thing to see (well, not high art but I have a good time (despite Jessica Alba's "hairdress" and make-up), the best thing to come from it, it's Marvel publishing this huge and high quality book, containing several of the best stories not just from the Fantastic Four career but the superheroe genre. Mr. Lee and Mr. Kirby were getting warmed up in the first twenty issues of this series and, once the time come, their creativity and imagination explode bringing characters and concepts that push the genre to higher grounds of pure delightfull and subtextual entertainment. From the exotic jungle of Wakanda to the cosmic horizons where the Watcher takes the Human Torch to look for something against Galactus, I think I'm not exaggerating here when I say every story from this hardcover is the very best from Marvel's old times and maybe, ever.

Sorry for my poor english.
