Amazon.co.uk Review

Fantastic Four is a light-hearted and funny take on Marvel Comics' first family of superherodom. It begins when down-on-his-luck genius Reed Richards (Ioan Gruffudd) has to enlist the financial and intellectual help of former schoolmate and rival Victor Von Doom (Julian McMahon) in order to pursue outer-space research involving human DNA. Also on the trip are Reed's best friend, Ben Grimm (Michael Chiklis); his former lover, Sue Storm (Jessica Alba), who's now Doom's employee and love interest; and her hotshot-pilot brother, Johnny Storm (Chris Evans). Things don't go as planned, of course, and the quartet becomes blessed--or is it cursed?--with superhuman powers: flexibility, brute strength, invisibility and projecting force fields, and bursting into flame. Meanwhile, Doom himself is undergoing a transformation.

Among the many entries in the comic-book-movie frenzy, Fantastic Four is refreshing because it doesn't take itself too seriously. Characterization isn't too deep, and the action is a bit sparse until the final reel (like most "first" superhero movies, it has to go through the "how did we get these powers and what we will do with them?" churn). But it's a good-looking cast, and original comic-book co-creator Stan Lee makes his most significant Marvel-movie cameo yet, in a speaking role as the FF's steadfast postal carrier, Willie Lumpkin. Newcomers to superhero movies might find the idea of a family with flexibility, strength, invisibility, and force fields a retread of The Incredibles, but Pixar's animated film was very much a tribute to the FF and other heroes of the last 40 years. The irony is that while Fantastic Four is an enjoyable B-grade movie, it's the tribute, The Incredibles, that turned out to be a film for the ages. --David Horiuchi, Amazon.com

3.0 out of 5 stars A real treat for Marvel fans, 5 Dec 2005
By A Customer
This review is from: Fantastic Four (2 Disc Special Edition) [2005] [DVD] (DVD)
This film was poorly received by film critics but then i dare say most film critics are not fans of Marvel superheroes. Granted, this is not a particularly well-directed film with hardly a storyline to speak of, other than describing how the Fantastic Four came into being. But if you are like me in that you have been a fan of Marvel superheroes like the Fantastic Four since you were a kid, then i reckon that this film will definitely hit the spot for you. This is no X-men or Spiderman, but perhaps most importantly the original Fantastic four characters are perfectly transfered here from their comic-book origins.

The sight of Jessica Alba in her underwear is worth the price of the DVD alone, frankly.

4.0 out of 5 stars More Depth to the Principal Characters, 30 Jun 2007

The extended version at 120 minutes is good value if you like drama as well as action. Many of the additional scenes are centred on understanding better each of the main characters, their motivations and reactions to what has happened to them; and how they interact in relationships outside the four. This applies particularly to "Thing" and and the Human Torch. Note that the extra footage includes material that was not included on the two disc edition as deleted scenes.

Th extended version also provides better continuity between scenes, strengthening the overall story telling. Overall, the film is enhanced considerably with the new material and I strongly recommend it if you enjoyed the original. I won't spoil the enjoyment by describing the new elements.

Well I bought this for £3.99 locally, and wasn't expecting much, it HAD to be better than daredevil though! I was shocked by just how much I enjoyed this movie, it didn't deserve to be panned as it was. The character interplay is well scripted and well acted, Grimm and the Torch having some of the best lines. The effects were very very good and while some time is spent on development it just helps the characters become more believeable. This is the best superhero adaptation done since X-men and Hellboy, I don't remember a lot of the comics or the old animated series but it seems very faithful. Personally I rate it above Spiderman (though I haven't seen 3 yet) Hulk, Daredevil etc all pale by comparison. This is a well crafted enjoyable movie well acted and engrossing, the only let down for me was that Dr Doom isn't evil enough, seriously Mike Myers would have been better!!!! Great movie can't wait for part 2!
