Product Description

Amazon.co.uk

The debut solo album from El-P, Fantastic Damage finds this rap firebrand elucidating on the confrontational themes that have characterised his career to date. As the lodestar of influential hip-hop trio Company Flow, founder of independent hip-hop label Def Jux, and producer for Cannibal Ox's outstanding apocalyptic rap work The Cold Vein, El-P has indelibly stamped his name across the landscape of leftfield hip-hop. But Fantastic Damage is quite possibly his most extreme statement yet: a sprawling magnum opus of broiling anger and dysfunctional angst, expressed through his violent production techniques and satirical rhymes.

In spirit, the music echoes the revolutionary squall of the Bomb Squad, while not actually sounding a huge amount like it: the blistering funk of "Deep Space 9 mm" boasts a far more syrupy feel than Public Enemy's tight jams, while "Dead Disnee" boasts more in common with the modern wave of laptop-wielding electronica artists than any traditional rap groove. Rhyme-wise, too, this is a bleak work: "Stepfather Factory" envisages a menacing apocayptic future where errant parents are replaced by malfunctioning cyborgs, while "Deep Space 9 mm" finds El-P waxing unprintable about his former record label, Rawkus. At 70 minutes, it's a spot long--but anyone acquainted with El-P's earlier work should lap this up. --Louis Pattison

5.0 out of 5 stars A blistering statement of intent 5 Mar 2004
Format:Audio CD
Firstly i'll reiterate what others have said, which is that on first play you'll think good, but maybe not great, but give it some time and concentration and you may well be including this in your top 5 hip-hop albums ever. From the moment you start playing the record, you'll get the dark forboding electronic soundscapes that el-p has done so well on his previous collaborations. This time, though, the album is all el-p and he doesn't give an inch. The beats are broken twisted and mashed up and the vocals raw and less concerned with keeping in time. He builds up 2 minute intros only to kill them in mid flow, he'll meld songs together and keep a particualr sound running through several tracks. To any mere mortal this would logically lead to a mess, but such is the genius of the man he always knows exactly where he's going, managing to pull off some spectaclar moments alomng the way. 'Truancy' for example starts off almost quietly but out of no where will come cruching beats and momentus scratching. And, once you comprehend it, it all just works. With so much going on the record sounds infinitely better when blasting out of a badass stereo system.

Lyrically El-p takes a dark and aggressive look on life. Stepfather factory probably being the most impressive with it's rye take on a 21st century salesman selling people a dream or Tuned Mass Damper which is probably the signature track on the album with its post apocalyptic sound of the inner city.

Having said that, this album won't be for everyone it's probably one of the most leftfield hip hop albums i've heard, so if you're looking for 50 cent go elsewhere but for those who appreciate the innovators this album is an absolute gem.

5.0 out of 5 stars A definitive classic 7 Jun 2002
Format:Audio CD
This album is 16 tracks of pure hip hop classics, there are no stand outs cos the whole damn thing is hot. You can't fault El-P's production, each track is memorable and his rhymes are tight as hell. There are guest spots from some of the illest emcees out there at the moment (Cage, Vast Aire of Can Ox,Aesop Rocl, Mr Lif etc.) All I can say is if you are a hip hop head then buy this album NOW. Def Jux is THE hip hop label of the moment making meaningful music, not just that bling bling gangsta bull. Unlike hip pop like Jay Z, Puffy, Dre etc. who are stuck in the late 90's, El-P and Def Jux are pushing out the hip hop musical border and with their own fresh sound.
