Amazon.co.uk Review

More ambitious in scope than any of its other animated films (before or to come), Disney's 1940 Fantasia was a dizzying, magical, and highly enjoyable marriage of classical music and animated images. Fantasia 2000 features some breathtaking animation and storytelling, and in a few spots soars to wonderful high points, but it still more often than not has the feel of walking in its predecessor's footsteps as opposed to creating its own path. A family of whales swimming and soaring to Respighi's The Pines of Rome is magical to watch, but ends all too soon; a forest sprite's dance of life, death, and rebirth to Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring too clearly echoes the original Fantasia's Night on Bald Mountain/Ave Maria sequence. But when it's on target, Fantasia 2000 is glorious enough to make you giddy. Hans Christian Andersen's "The Steadfast Tin Soldier" is a perfect narrative set to Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No. 2, and Donald Duck's guest appearance as the assistant to Noah (of ark fame) set to Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance marches is a welcome companion piece (though not an equal) to The Sorcerer's Apprentice, the one original Fantasia piece included here. The high point of Fantasia 2000, though, is a fantastic day-in-the-life sequence of 1930s New York City set to Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue and animated in the style of cartoonist Al Hirschfeld; it's a perfect melding of music, story, and animation. Let's hope future Fantasias (reportedly in the works) take a cue from the best of this compilation. The music is provided by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, conducted by James Levine, interspersed with negligible intros by Steve Martin, Bette Midler, Itzhak Perlman, James Earl Jones, and others. --Mark Englehart

For all of you who -- like me -- wondered what might be new in the so-called Platinum release of Fantasia 2000 (Blu-ray), after having seen a double-feature (Fantasia/ Fantasia 2000) on Blu-ray at the end of 2010 (see Fantasia/Fantasia 2000 [Blu-ray]), here's the answer:
NOTHING IS NEW!
Actually, this release is only the commercial way of selling the SAME copy included in the double-feature box, only separately (even the bar-code on the stand-alone box is the same as the one of the Blu-ray of the same name included in the double-feature box!)

How do I know? Quite simply, as I could not find any satisfactory documentation, I simply purchased BOTH versions, and ... compared them!
(don't worry: I did return the superfluous, stand-alone edition)

So, unless you really want ONLY the Fantasia 2000 on Blu-ray, you'll be better advised to go for the double-feature box (see link above), as -- for [almost] the same price -- it offers BOTH Fantasia (1940) AND Fantasia 2000 (same version)!

Hope this helps :)

Enjoy!

P.S.: NOWHERE on ANY of the Boxes does the "Platinum" qualifier appear - ONLY "Special Edition"; so I am still as puzzled as any of you as to how Platinum found its way at Amazon's (and some others) listings ...

Fantasia 2000 special edition is another piece of musical animation to enjoy. Even though it will not match the 1940's predecessor, it is still a delight to watch and visually stunning. The legacy of a much loved animation continues to live on and attract widespread popularity. Combining animation and classical music was pioneered by Disney and added a new dimension in creative story-telling, as Fantasia laid the foundation to achieve these massive heights in animation history. Fanstasia 2000 re-introduces the classical animation 60 years later with an impressive array of well-crafted segments unfolding a story and playing beautiful music from some of the greatest composers to embrace this world.

Fantasia 2000 comprises eight beautifully animated segments. I appreciated all the segments. A varied range of scenery and showing how amazing animation can be to viewers has been achieved through each segment. The following segments are featured: Symphony No. 5 in C minor-I. Allegro con brio ,Pines of Rome , Rhapsody in Blue ,Piano Concerto No. 2 in F Major-I. Allegro, The Carnival of the Animals, Finale, The Sorcerer's Apprentice, Pomp and Circumstance and Firebird Suite - 1919 Version. Disney's love of animals and magical themes marks a strong presence. We also observe a new sequences with 1930's New York. Mythological and nature themes appear in some of the sequences. Disney retained a familiar piece from the original known as The Sorcerer's Apprentice, a segment featuring a much love Disney character of Mickey mouse.

Disney is truly a world class animation studio, as the attention to details is superb and it conveys strong feeling through the effective use of animation. I am pleased to include the new version of Fantasia in my collection of Disney animations. I love the way Disney creates animation in its real beauty in this modern version of Fantasia. The whole family would enjoy this piece. Disney's additional features are interesting and worth having a look at. Well done to Disney for bringing the magic and joy of Fantasia in the 20th century.

Despite increasing the volume to the highest level, the sound quality was so poor that I'm returning the item because it cannot be heard with any pleasure at all.
