Reviews

Germany released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), German ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), German ( Subtitles ), ANAMORPHIC WIDESCREEN (2.35:1), SPECIAL FEATURES: Interactive Menu, Uncut, SYNOPSIS: Fanny Hill (Lisa Raines) is a buxom country maiden who arrives in the big city and quickly begins an affair with the scion of a wealthy family in this softcore version of an old British tale. When the clan patriarch dies, Fanny is ready to marry her lover until she discovers he has been unfaithful -- that sets her on a course of erotic adventures that begins in protest and ends in great wealth. By the time she has experienced almost every kind of sex imaginable -- or unimaginable -- she is a millionairess. Loosely based on the scandalous, 18th-century novel Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure by John Clelland, Fanny Hill had two different cinematic incarnations in the 1960s (by Russ Meyer and Mac Ahlberg). No one has accused this version of subtle sophistication or profoundly interpretive acting. ...Fanny Hill ( Fanny Hill - Die Memoiren eines Freudenmädchen ) ( John Cleland's Fanny Hill: Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure )

3.0 out of 5 stars Unusual format, so-so adaptation 14 Jan 2010
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This film adaptation of the infamous novel looks to have been the pet project of Valentine Palmer. The DVD cover says that not only is he the producer, but he is the director and writer as well. Quite what qualified Mr Palmer to assume these roles are moot points because up to this time, his work consisted of bit-parts in TV programmes such as Crossroads, The Sweeney and Minder. The rest of the cast fare little better having little or nothing of note to their names. Having said all that, this production isn't that bad - it isn't great either but it is OK for what was probably a tight budget.

As in the book, the story of Fanny Hill is of a poor country girl who falls into the unsavoury world of whorehouses but by a series of fortunate encounters becomes one of the gentry and very rich. Most of the salient points are covered and the main characters are there but the impression is that it all happens very quickly. The unusual aspect of this film is that there is no dialogue. The story is told by a female narrator, supposedly Fanny reading from her memoirs with a background music track. This was not to my taste and both the narration and music did start to annoy after a while.

The acting shows why the cast never became household names although they surely did their best. The sex scenes were nothing much to mention although Cheryl Dempsey looked very attractive. It is a great pity that she has done little else because she could surely do better than this. To anyone considering watching any of the Fanny Hill films, my advice is to read the book first.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable bawdy romp 10 Jan 2010
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This film adaptation of John Cleland's eighteenth century novel has turned the notoriously explicit and graphic novel into an almost comedic restoration bawdy romp. Some instances in the film border on the slapstick. However, apart from a few minor instances, the narrative remains very faithful to the book, and apart from Esther Davis, all the main characters are there such as Charles, Mrs Brown, Mrs Cole, Mr H, etc.

This adaptation may have been written to be a bit of a comedy but the production values are first class. Famous performers such as Shelley Winters, Oliver Reed and Wilfed Hyde-White lend the film a certain gravitas while a bevy of glamour models has been recruited to play the ladies of pleasure. Anyone familiar with the term Page 3 Girl would probably recognise Tracy Dixon, Maria Harper and Susie Silvey. No expense has been spared on authentic costumes and props which serve to give the whole production an air of class while location filming also included period houses.

On the technical side, this film is the same as the UK release but the aspect ratio is 1.77:1 instead of 1.33:1 and the picture seemed to be a bit grainy compared to the UK edition. Perhaps it had been transferred from different stock.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable bawdy romp 19 July 2010
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This film is the same as the German version I reviewed elsewhere. The only difference is that this UK edition is full screen instead of widescreen. I should also add that anyone who wants to know what Fanny Hill is really like, they should read the book. As you read the book you will realise that in these neurotic and paranoid times a true film adaptation can never be made. This version is probably as close as one can get, so enjoy.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money 2 July 2003

Poor acting and worse sex scenes. I was unable to stay awake long enough to see the entire film so it may get better later on but I seriously doubt it. One of the few DVDs I have ever thrown out.

I had seen this film on Cablet Tv network years ago and remembered it for the reasons of its content and it followed a happy storyline that this film pursued, more than what the book depicted.. A very crediable version of the story but done in a suitable way.
