Review

"Once again, Herb Goldman has proven to be a master at transforming cold grey facts and scholarly research into lively and vibrant literature. Fanny Brice is a treasure of inside information and is as enlightening as it is engaging to read."--Ronald J. Fields, author of W.C. Fields: A Life
"This is an excellent biography of Fanny Brice. Herbert Goldman has done a splendid job unearthing a great deal of new information which he has presented with considerable skill."--Charles Higham, author of The Duchess of Windsor
"An affectionate chronicle of three lively decades in the theater's pre-World War II heyday."--The New York Times Book Review

Product Description

Fanny Brice was arguably the greatest American stage comedienne and the first truly great torch singer. Best known today through the Broadway and Hollywood versions of Funny Girl, the vehicle that catapulted Barbara Streisand to super-stardom, her most famous role was as `Baby Snooks' the `incorrigible tot of network radio from 1936 to 1951'. This meticulously researched biography chronicles her entire stage career from childhood amateur shows to national fame. Full of colourful anecdote, it covers her personal life, including three broken marriages - one two a notorious gangster - and also includes four appendices detailing every aspect of her stage, film, radio, and recording careers.

Funny Girl 17 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Fanny Brice had no less than 3 films made about her life.Rose of Washington Square in 1939 and then Funny Girl in the Sixties and Funny Lady in the seventies.Yet despite this i would be surprised if anyone in the UK would recognise her name. She worked in her early years on the stage. She made only a handful of films and finished her professional career as Baby Snooks on American radio. This book was written in 1992 when most of her contemporaries had died.So the author had only a limited number of individuals available to interview. Also whilst he was able to speak to some members of her more distant family he was not able to speak to her close family. He has therefore done a fine job of bringing Brice and the era in which she lived in back to life. She comes over as a pretty tough customer which is not surprising given the environment she lived in and the way she was treated by her husbands. The problem is though that we have to take his word and those of contemporary reviewers for the greatness of her talent.Like many Broadway performers of this time she is not a film natural. Also i have listened to some of the Baby Snooks radio shows and i found them excrutiatingly unfunny. When she died she was almost at the end of her final series and it would not have transferred to tv.clearly she was a performer who had effectively outlived her career even though she was only 59 when she died.

one of the most unbiased, yet loving tributes to a real star 13 Mar 1999
By davester42@aol.com - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I had the pleasure of reading FANNY BRICE by Herbert Goldman when it first came out in 1992. I am sorry that it is now out of print, as it is one of the most detailed writings on a stage/vaudeville star I have ever encountered. From her early struggles, to the height of her stardom, to her untimely death, this grand lady lead a memorable life that few can ever hope for. This lady conquered every medium she went out for. It should be read by young people aspiring to the arts to show them just how real troupers their ancestors really were......Mr Goldman also wrote the definitive book on another great, Al Jolson..I am looking forward to the one that he is writing now on Eddie Cantor. What a perfect trilogy on old Broadway......Kudos to you Mr Goldman...

I like it! 10 Jan 2011
By Vincent Angeline - Published on Amazon.com

This book is great. I ordered so I could do research for the role of Fanny Brice in Funny Girl. Knowing the background of the historical Fanny is proving helpful, even though the musical isn't QUITE accurate. I recommend this book, as it is well put together and informative.
