Book Description

When "Big Tim" Creighton spies the mincing fop headed toward Forsaken Ranch, he is appalled. Thankful his boss isn't around to witness the arrival of his kin, Tim decides he'll turn "Fancy Pants" Hathwell into a man worthy of respect.

Lady Sydney Hathwell never intended to don men's attire, but when her uncle mistakenly assumed she was a male, the answer to her problems seemed clear. Her disguise as "Syd" was meant to be temporary...but the arranged marriage she's fleeing, her uncle's attitude toward the fairer sex--and her own pride--compel her to continue the guise far longer than she had intended.

When her deception is exposed, will she be forced to abandon her hopes for family...and true love?

    5.0 out of 5 stars Laugh a minute romance 23 May 2008
    Format:Paperback
This has to be Cathy's best book. It is both interesting and humourous, engaging the readers mind and heart. Her characters are 3D and interesting.

Lady Sydney Hathwell flees to her Uncle's ranch to escape an unwanted betrothal. Knowing that her Uncle is under the impression that she is a boy and that he has no use for girls, Sydney disguises herself as a boy.

When she arrives in Texas and turns up on Forsaken, her Uncle isn't there and she is left to the charge of 'Big Tim' Creighton.

The last thing 'Big Tim' wants to do is babysit a British fop and he determines to turn 'Syd' into a 'proper man' before Fuller Johnson returns to a thorough embarrassment of a nephew.

Big Tim's methods for making a man out of Sydney are set to kill her before her true identity is discovered.

I struggled to get into this book initially, and nearly gave up around page 50, but I decided to forge ahead for the sake of saying I'd actually read more than one book from the library this year. It's a silly reason, but I'm glad it motivated me to keep reading as I did end up enjoying this book. Although it took a while to pull me into the story, I did end up caring about Sydney, and the setting and secondary characters made for a fun read.

This is, for the most part, a fun and fluffy book. Given that I'm reading some pretty heavy books this semester (it wasn't fun being a woman in eighteenth century Britain, folks, trust me) this was just what I needed. I did find some of the dialogue cheesy and there were several situations that felt a bit contrived. I'm not sure if this improved as the plot developed, or if the story was engaging enough that I stopped noticing these flaws. Either way, I was able to look beyond them and enjoy the fun story after the first 100 pages.

My biggest complaints about this book have to be the spiritual aspect and the anti-climatic ending. In a way, I do think that Sydney's spiritual dilemma is probably realistic, but I didn't like the way that Tim kept worrying about how Sydney didn't know God and kept trying to talk to her about her faith. Considering that my husband wasn't a Christian when I met him and how I didn't want to push him away by talking about God too much, I couldn't relate to how Tim dealt with Sydney's situation. Perhaps in an historical setting, it was genuinely easier to discuss religion openly. But even so, it felt a bit forced how he kept nagging her about her faith and bringing God into every discussion. The way Sydney dealt with her faith seemed believable, but the way Tim approached the issue didn't really endear me to him.
