BBC Review

Chromeo are Dave 1, a Ph. D student in French literature, and P. Thugg, his childhood friend and fellow hip hop anorak. You might have heard of them: back in 2004, their blend of tongue-in-cheek electro-funk caused a stir with the release of debut album She's In Control. And, after a short absence, their follow up album, Fancy Footwork - a record which lists Rick James and Eddie Murphy among its influences - hopes to get people talking again.

Hearing that, not everyone will be convinced. After all, Chromeo are hardly the only band pedalling eighties influences. But, while indie fusionists may toy with the occasional synthesiser, Chromeo aren't afraid to go that one step further. In short, their music is a shameless return to the glistening, sex-saturated synth-pop which ruled that decade.

On Fancy Footwork, the duo blend quivering synths with clean, metronomic drum beats. And, somehow, by tossing together the trends of yesteryear, they manage to create a fresh and exciting sound. But what makes Fancy Footwork so infectious is its zest and imagination. Chromeo don't just sound like their synth-pop ancestors; they think like them too. Take opening track 'Tenderoni', for example - a reckless blend of gadgets last seen in Peter Frampton's wheelie bin and lyrics so sleazy they'd make even R. Kelly blush.

Again, while 80s kitsch might be the flavour of the month - and one which many are quickly tiring of - Fancy Footwork is one of the few records which captures both the sound and spirit of the decade. --Robert Jackman

For those who are familiar with Chromeo already, all you need to know is that this is very similar to their debut album, although it's actually an improvement with better song writing and more varied beats.

For those new to Chromeo then prepare to step back into the eighties! It would be easy to dismiss Chromeo as 'novelty', with the often slightly tonque-in-cheek lyrics, but therein lies the genius. It borders on being cheesy but it never crosses that line because it's not trying to be something it's not, and doesn't take itself too seriously (which is what sets them apart) - this is for those open-minded individuals who know the best music isn't 'pop'. This is just two guys with keyboards who have clearly become a little too taken with the 80s, creating funky little songs that entertain both the head and feet. Bonafied Lovin is the standout track with that guitar riff and perfectly executed beats and cooly delivered vocals.

This album is as absurd as 80s group Five Star whilst being as fun-lovin as early Scissor Sisters with beats similar to those found in Madonna's Like A Virgin album.

In what was another poor year for music, this was one of the few shining lights, so give it a spin. Hey! lighten-up! it's Chromeo :)

i have been a fan of Chromeo since their first album about 3 years ago
and have been eagerly awaiting a second installment
then the bloody thing completely passed me by on release! dam

anyways - this album is some seriously funky prince flavoured breakdance electro - but its firmly in the light-hearted fun vein.
there is some awesome synth use - sorely missing in much of todays music
and the band's style nods to every electro artist of old skool and new! there is some Tyrone Brunson here, lots of Prince, Mantronix, every breakdance song uv ever heard, Daft Punk, and loads of fast paced great riffs that are seriously danceable.
but it wont be normal dancing - it'll be the robot - you'll be sliding and posing, freezes and worms - doing the robot dance proud.

Anyways - i cant recommend it enough - if u like any of the above artists - u'll love this - great fun and easy lyrics and seriously fun and clever electro funk!
Chromeo have got to be the best practioners of this style music around today.

my word this album is good! i was a fan from the first time i heard needy girl from their first album and this work of art simply cements chromeo's place in my heart. the production is better than she's in control as is the general standard of song. it is less repetative and if possible even cheesier and more 80s sounding! standout tracks are the hilarious "momma's boy," "call me up" and the slightly Prince-esque "outta sight."

if you are a fan of she's in control then definitely buy this and if you have heard any new songs such as "tenderoni" or "fancy footwork" then be safe in the knowledge that those songs are fair representations of the standard of the album.
