Product Description

In 1998, four childhood buddies with a shared love of all things Star Wars reunite for one final, hilarious odyssey. Their insane plan: a cross-country road trip to storm George Lucas Skywalker Ranch and steal a copy of Episode I before its release. With the police, a crew of angry Trekkies, and a crazy pimp hot on their trail, what could possibly go wrong?

Fanboys is cleverly directed. Where many road trip movies are based around sex, drugs and gross-out moments, Fanboys does something a little different. Yes, it dabbles with those factors, however at it's core is a strong theme, unsurprisingly centred around Star Wars (and some Trek action too). This creates an extra layer to the film and is enhanced by likeable stars and less stereotypes than usual (although it is still far from free of such clichés). A shameless marketing plug notes that Seth Rogen stars and he does, in a few scenes, one funny character, one not so. Fanboys is not hilarious, it offers a few chuckles but it's real entertainment lies in the nods to the biggest space opera of out time and the credible performances from it's relatively inexperienced cast.

The extras are more miss than hit though, A few thankfully deleted scenes, a trailer and a handful of short documentaries with the actors and director as talking heads. Not much real entertainment to be had from the special features, however better than nothing at all.

Don't get me wrong - I'm a big Star Wars fan and a fan of all things in the vein of Superbad, Mallrats, etc etc, so I should be the ideal demographic for this film, but this left me expecting a little more.
A lot of the 'funny' moments in the film, especially from Dan Fogler, just come across as a bit weak and puerile at times. It's like the film-makers were really close but didn't quite pull it off. I almost get the sense that the film is targeting 15 year olds rather than 18-35 year olds who might be more appropriate for the whole Star Wars fanboy thing. In summary, it passed a couple of hours, but it isn't quite as epic as it thinks it is.

If I were a Trekkie, I would probably hate "Fanboys": in this quasi-road movie that has a group of friends invade George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch, "Star Wars" fans are depicted as lovable losers, and "Trekkies" as boring and uptight idiots. Thankfully, I'm more of a "Star Wars" guy myself, so I can forgive the film for not being popculturally correct and enjoy it for what it is as a comedy/parody/"Star Wars" tribute. And let me tell you: it is pretty, pretty funny here and there. Oh yeah, there are many gags that don't quite work, sure, but the crazy pacing of the movie won't allow your mind to linger on these. The problem is, if you saw some great "geek comedies" before, you know "Fanboys" isn't up to the highest standard of the genre. Shortly speaking, it's never as funny as, say, Kevin Smith's best films - not even when Kevin Smith himself appears here. But still - it's an enjoyable little movie with some very funny moments and some delicious cameos - I won't reveal anything more than the Smith cameo, as that would be spoiling all the fun of discovering them one by one, I guess.

As for the extras: a commentary would be welcome, but instead we get a bunch of short docs, several deleted scenes (most of them rather terrible), a trailer and "webisodes" called "Disturbances in the Force". These are mildly entertaining but don't do the movie justice.
