Product Description

The 10-CD set 'Famous Organ Music from Europe' presents organ music from six centuries played on famous organs in Germany, Austria, Poland, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Holland, and Transylvania. The instruments on which the pieces are played are among the greatest in existence and were built by names such as Silbermann, Schnitger, Hillebrand, and Grenzing.

The organ works featured in this collection are by celebrated organ composers like J.S. Bach, Buxtehude and Sweelink as well as lesser-known masters. The music is performed by renowned organists including Harald Vogel, Michael Radulescu, Lorenzo Ghielmi, Jozef Sluys, Christoph Bossert, Horst Gehann, Oskar Gottlieb Blarr, Jean Ferrard, Xavier Deprez, and Andreas Liebig.

This 10 CD box set is a real treasure trove - of instruments, composers and performers. A good proportion of the music is by composers who remain relatively or completely unknown and while some of the instruments are well-known in organ circles many are out of the way and rarely recorded. None of the performers are well-known names in the organ world, never mind beyond it, but all are competent and many of them produce exciting performances of their repertoire. The surprise to me was the sound of these discs. They are, for the most part, very well recorded and sound fresh and alive (most dating from the 80s and 90s). The only disc I didn't like is disc 10, which is a pity because it contains some real rarities. From the description on the sleeve it seems it's recorded on some unusual kind of an instrument but it's so close up it makes for uncomfortable listening. This and an absence of information about music, instruments and performers does detract somewhat from the enjoyment and it's for this reason that I aware 4 stars rather than 5. But don't let the few hesitations stop you from sampling this treasure trove of riches. At the price of one standard CD it's a bargain.

A Great Collection of Organs in Europe - A Grand Tour 12 Dec. 2013
By Jerry of San Francisco - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
A Great Collection of Organs in Europe - I did not have great expectations when I ordered this boxed set, but was amazed at the quality of sound. There was not too much new for me in the collection, except for disk 10 with music of Transylvania. Some of the organs presented in the set are quite marvelous. It was interesting hearing different interpretations of pieces that I was familiar with. I look forward to a second hearing in the near future.

Great ... but all early almost pedal-less. 2 Feb. 2014
By Harold E. Wills - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
Beautiful organs and sound (playing) but disappointed that it was all early music when most English and other countries organs didn't have the pedal boards to add to their compositions. Still ... A grande set.
