5.0 out of 5 stars Finally! A kindle edition of Enid Blyton's most successful 'Famous Five' books! 4 Dec 2010
By Jeffrey A - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Finally, Enid Blyton's most popular series featuring the 'Famous Five' is now on Kindle! The first book, 'Five On A Treasure Island' was written in 1942 and the 21st book, 'Five are Together Again' completed the series 21 years later in 1963.

SEE MY PHOTO IN CUSTOMER IMAGES

The Famous Five are a group of children who have the most exciting adventures involving smugglers, spies, lost treasures, secret maps, caves, circus folk and gypsies. They holiday in quaint seaside villages or cycle, hike or caravan through the English countryside, often by themselves.

Ginger beer, ham rolls and hot buttered scones always seem to be the kids' staple diet! Enid Blyton cleverly made these simple meals sound so 'deliciously' exciting!

'Five Go Down To The Sea' (1953) is the 12th book in the 'Famous Five' series. Holidaying in the wild Cornish coast, Julian, Dick, Anne, George and Timmy the dog once again stumble into adventure...

Who is flashing lights from the old tower on stormy nights? Would they be cruel enough to deliberately lure somebody onto treacherous rocks on the Cornish coast? Can the 'Famous Five' solve this mystery safely?

'Five Go Down To The Sea' promises to be a cliffhanger! LOL! Pun intended! :))

Although, these stories are around 50 to 70 years old, they remain fresh and exciting today. The evergreen book formula? It's simple! Enid Blyton created 'believable' characters complete with faults. Readers identified with these kids back then, and still do so today! (Over 8 million Enid Blyton books are sold annually. The most successful Enid Blyton books of all time? You guessed it! The Famous Five!

Julian - `the tall boy with the determined face', could be 'a pompous one' at times!

Dick played the stereotype subservient younger brother to Julian. However, Dick is also seen as having a sense of humor and not being easily scared. Dick quickly became everyone's favorite middle brother.

Anne is the perfect homemaker - she reminds me of one of the housewives in the movie 'Pleasantville'.

By far, the most interesting character is George. She's stubborn, brave, strong-willed and loyal. She's an excellent swimmer and can even pilot her small row boat through the treacherous waters around her very own Kirrin Island! In 'Five On A Hike Together', Julian (in one of his pompous roles) reprimands George by saying `You may look like a boy and behave like a boy, but you're a girl all the same'!

Interestingly, Enid Blyton supposedly based George's character on herself!

This kindle edition has `a note from Enid Blyton's grandaughter' Sophie Smallwood, dated 14 June 2010. This is a really nice touch bridging the gap between young and old readers!

NOTE: Enid Blyton also wrote a number of short stories featuring the 'Famous Five' characters. These were finally collected together in 1963 as 'Five Have a Puzzling Time and Other Stories' - the '22nd book' in the 'Famous Five' series!

5 STARS for this ENTIRE 'Famous Five' series!
