More About the Author

When she wasn't out riding her bike or making things out of loo rolls and scraps of fabric, Ruth Brocklehurst spent much of her childhood reading - mainly stories about historical characters. Since then, she has been lucky enough to combine her love of books, stories and history in her job as an editor and writer for Usborne. If she could go back in time she'd like to meet Mary Queen of Scots.

Her book about the Victorians won the Longman/History Today New Generation Award.

Just the right amount of information to introduce children to great artists and their masterpieses. We learn about the artist's life and are shown two or more works of art by each. There is a clever timeline wiggling its way along the bottom of each page which puts the work of the artists into the historical context. Usefully, instead of being constrained by the now traditional two page format, some artists are given full coverage by being given 3 or even 4 pages. There is a practical glossary and a very useful section on the creation of the masterpieces, arranged by artist for easy reference. An excellent book for home or school.

I would have given this book 5 stars as its well written and nicely presented for children but as my 9 year old daughter read through pages and pages of famous artists I suddenly realised that they did not include one female artist for her to get inspiration from! And that has ruined it for me (and her). In this day and age it is important to include women as a strong role model and not just show the importance of male artists. I would look elsewhere for a book on artists for our growing generation to read.
And in case you are interested here are some famous female artists they could have included: Frida Kahlo, Sarah Peale, Catherine Critcher, Georgia O'Keeffe,

It has SOME of the most famous artists' little biography and is great for kids to learn about them and their work. My 8 y.o daughter loved it so much , when she went to the National Gallery and Tate Modern she could recognise the artists and their work and felt important and grown up thanks to this book!
