I bought this because:
- I already have quite a bit of data entered using an earlier version of FTM;
- I'd lost the old FTM disks and needed to re-install;
- My previous purchase had left me with the opinion that with the more expensive versions of FTM, you pay a lot for a bunch of data disks that aren't actually very useful (especially if you are a UK family).
Hence this £9.99 super-basic variant of FTM looked a real bargain.

I reckon it still _is_ a bargain, but be aware that some features - all the trees except the most basic, bookmarking, saving custom views - are disabled in this version. However, one can pay $19.95 online to unlock these. Even including that, it's a decent price for the basic database. I haven't decided yet whether to cough up for the upgrade, as most of the unlockable features aren't that important to me.
I'm pretty happy with it. The changes in style and the increased web-savvyness make it easier to use compared to previous versions - probably not worth upgrading from earlier FTM versions for (though, for a tenner, maybe they are), but nice all the same. If you are new to Family Tree software, this would be a good package to dip your toes in the water with - it will take you a long way even without buying the extra $19.95 worth, and will expand to being the full-on FTM if you want to later.

I bought this only to discover that its essentially a trial version with all the major features locked. As soon as you install it you are asked if you want to upgrade to the "full" version for extra cash. But they don't call the unlocked retail version "full" - its called "deluxe". IMO its dishonest marketing. I wouldn't recommend anyone buy this version - either get the full version, or another product.

I have just installed Family Tree maker Starter Edition over Family tree Maker V8 and was disappointed I lost all the tree facilities of the previous version and was left with a very basic tree. The rest is just a slightly different format of what I had before. In making the change I gained nothing but lost some of my previous options, avoid unless you want to buy the dearer version with extra cd's that are not a lot of use. I'm going back to V8.
