Product Description

Product Description

Family therapy is a rapidly expanding field. This book introduces a range of concepts, skills and applications from a systemic approach.

The first part sets out the theory and examines relationship types, the family life cycle, interactional sequences and different models of change. The next section puts the theory into practice. It describes verbal and non-verbal techniques which are used to elicit information and initiate change. The last part considers some of the necessary conditions for the successful integration and application of this approach in social work practice, illustrated by detailed case examples.

A series of graduated exercises is designed to encourage readers to explore the theory and practice of family therapy in their own agencies.

Burnham write this a few years ago but it has stood the test of time in my view. It is written in an easyily accessible way with attention to real dilemmas for practitioners. I still use my copy and would highly recommend it.

I found this was a good introduction to the theory and practise of family therapy for someone like myself who already provides counselling for individuals. There are a number of exercises for the reader, which I tried doing. I found them useful but very challenging. Although written by a social worker, it is useful for counsellors too.

My comments aren't about the book which is an excellent introduction to the subject, but about the kindle edition.

The sloppy formatting makes it almost impossible to read: no paragraph breaks, no chapter breaks, and it is not possible to navigate from one chapter to the next. The publisher, Routledge, accepts no responsibility and Amazon say they can't do anything about it.

In short, don't buy it.
