This book is a must have for counselling students studying family therapy.Absolutely great for explaining the theory and how to put them into practice,giving a critical evaluation of the family theories.Gives an integrated model for the practice of family therapy and explains how to use it.Excellent guide for students.

Alan Carr writes that avoidant children sulk on several occasions in this book. I was shocked and disappointed that there is no appreciation of the common fate met by toddlers who have learned early to avoid their parents/caregivers as they mature; they are more likely than other children to be bullies during their childhood, less likely to be able to ask for help at school, more likely to have difficulties in personal relationships and thus more likely to be isolated and suffer depression in adulthood. All because these (usually very bright) children learn very early that their caregivers are not likely to respond to their age appropriate signals for help/comfort and stop asking for and expecting such support. I don't believe an under-indulged child should ever be labelled a 'sulker'. The pain of the consequences of early learned avoidancy could be prevented if only adults would stop interpreting the behaviour of such infants /children /adolescents /adults from the perspective of their own likely under indulged upbringing.
For a book on Family therapy covering multiple perspectives I would expect much better.
Having issued this !Health Warning! the book seems to me to be otherwise a good overview, succinctly written and otherwise worthy of the praise it has received.

it is difficult to get books that not only mention theory but also detail the practises that relate to the theory. This book has evidence based practices and has its own critque on its flaws.

Another comprehensive and accessible resource book for family therapy students and for any therapists whose practice requires an understanding of family systems and/or couples. It offers a clear and cogent outline of the theories and history of the principal family therapy pioneers (Bowen, Bateson, et al.) and the different modern schools: systemic, structural, social constructionist, etc. As with his 'Child and Adolescent Psychology' [ASIN:041519492X The Handbook of Child and Adolescent Clinical Psychology], it is Carr's style which makes this book so successful. He communicates the theory and facts comprehensively but not in a dry/boring manner; instead the material he offers is legible and comprehensible, with clear diagrams, summaries and a list of further reading material at the end of each chapter. There are no clinical case histories, etc. but instead there are frequent practical suggestions: further questions that may be asked, exercises to suggest, recommended reading on associated topics, etc. An ideal reference for practitioners and students.
