This is a book I highly recommend as reading it can help extremely lonely people (and the closet is a VERY lonely place) feel like part of a much wider community.

I really enjoyed 'Family Outing' (and not just for the insight on Cher!). The book relates Chastity Bono's experiences of "coming out" in the public eye, and also her parents' reactions. There are also coming out stories from gay men and lesbians from a variety of different backgrounds, and it is fascinating to read about their - and their parents - different coping mechanisms. Overall, 'Family Outing' is an inspiring read for gay people (and probably their parents too), and I would thoroughly recommend it.

I had only just realised I was gay when I bought this book and to say I found it useful is an understatement. It was extremely well written and very easy to read. The coming out stories from other people give a balanced feel to the book - so it's not too positive or too negative. I'm not sure I'm ready to come out yet, but I feel much more prepeared for it after reading this book.
