Noah Gundersen is a one of those singers that roll off the American singer songwriter conveyor belt. He has yet to break out of the confines of a limited but dedicated fan base in the US where he also performs with his wider family who are a talented bunch of muso's and do "a lovely turn" at Christmas. "Family" is the self-released third EP by Gundersen and shows a songwriting talent maturing at an astonishing rate of knots. Those with a penchant for influence spotting will no doubt pick up echoes of Ryan Adams, the Civil Wars, Fleet Foxes and especially Damien Rice. The EP was produced with Daniel Mendez and released in 2011 following intense sessions in Dallas. Mr Mendez has done an excellent job encouraging Gundersen to express himself in gravelly tones and songs which resonate with any one with a taste for pure emotion in an American mode. the powerful "David" kicks the EP off with real intensity, but is subsequently bettered by the pounding "Fire" which would not got amiss on "Barton Hollow". Best of all is the excellent "Nashville" underpinned by a haunting fiddle and skipping along all dark and moody. It is "Garden" however that steals the prize, a lovely lament about the importance of family ties which just about tugs at every emotion known to man and is beautifully sung to boot.

Some of Gundersen's songs have soundtracked the American Hells Angels series "Sons of Anarchy" but that itself is a minority taste. Tours dates in the US supporting the likes of Josh Ritter and Vampire Weekend should partly address this. It is rumoured however that somewhere in the system is a full blown debut waiting for release and if Gundersen can match the high quality on this EP it will be a rare treat. One to watch

I was introduced to Noah Gundersen's haunting music like so many others through the TV series Sons of Anarchy.

Since first hearing him Noah has held a regular spot in my playlists. It is wonderful to hear singer/songwriters and musicians like Noah coming through and they deserve every respect in a world where 'singer/dancers' get more airplay and TV time than a lot of the more talented musicians out there.

Now all I need is an international tour!
