Review

Family and More, a book of poetry by Helena Harper, is like a poetic synopsis of a wartime saga, the life of a family with a backdrop of history, a memoir told in poetic blurbs. The author encapsulates characters and events breathtakingly. There is so much here to think about once one turns the last page. I was left wanting more! More!...A" Carolyn Howard-Johnson, multi award-winning writer of fiction and poet

Product Description

Family and More is a beautifully lyrical collection of verse, in which Helena Harper recalls the people who have touched her life and taught her precious life lessons. As the daughter of a German mother and English father, who met in Hamburg at the end of World War II, she explores notions of national and emotional boundaries, the horrors of war, self-discovery and love, returning time and again to that oldest and most emotive of themes: the infinite power of the human spirit. At the end, we are left knowing that every encounter in life can be a force for good and, if we see with the heart, our man-made divisions will seem both absurd and insignificant. A moving celebration of our common humanity.

After the brilliant It's a Teacher's Life, Helena Harper now turns her unique style to Family and More. In this highly original book of verse, the personal memories and experiences of the author offer us some very valuable lessons in life. Often moving, very funny at times,it is another winner for Helena Harper.

This is a fascinating and original portrayal in verse of the influence of family and others on the life of the author. As she describes her characters, she reflects on the futility of war, animosity and negativity and the value of persistence, fortitude, compromise and negotiation. She makes us think about those who have touched our lives. What lessons have we learnt from them? We can learn from both the positive and negative influences, fot they teach us the value of acting in a positive and supportive manner towards others.
A reflective and emotive compilation of striking quality that holds the reader enthralled.

A really interesting read if you are interested in family history. Written in verse it flows through Helen Harper's family and friends lives sensitively and emotionally. A lovely portrait in particular of her mother whose war time experiences forged the strong and loving woman she became.
