This is the first book in a fantastically magic series. I loved it!

Sydlynn Hayle is a not so typical teen. She is a powerful witch, who also happens to be part demon. I liked her a lot, even though the angst and self pity sometimes got on my nerves. Her life is not simple by any means, but when danger threatens her family, she is one of the bravest heroines to grace the pages of a book. She is stubborn and determined, and even more powerful than she fully realises.

I downloaded this book after a friend recommended it a while ago. Unfortunately, I have only just now managed to get to read it. I am really kicking myself, because it was a fantastic story!
I started to read and couldn't put it down! Sydlynn may not be a typical teen, but her desire to be normal and fit in is something that everyone can relate to. It was interesting to see how this character grew through the story; her confidence in her magic and the relationships with new friends. I loved Syd's grandmother, who although damaged by a powerfully misfired spell, is still a formidable woman in her lucid moments. There are several twists in this story, which kept me hooked! The coven is facing a dangerous foe and, although I kind of guessed who that was before it was revealed, the mystery and suspense that is built up was electrifying. Syd's also facing a potential love triangle, and a fight between her witch half and what her demon half wants. I must admit that I am not really a fan of love triangles, but Brad Peters and Quaid Moromond are like chalk and cheese. Brad may be the star football player of the school, but I liked his warmth and charm. Quaid is the typical bad boy, but it's more image than reality. He is dark and brooding, but also has a vibe that Syd's demon is drawn to. He is still a bit of an enigma though, so I am hoping that I'll get to know him better. There was one surprise I didn't see coming, and that involves a cheerleading bully. I will leave it to you to find out what happened. I will say that it did bring a tear to my eye, in a good way. I was a bit sad when I reached the end of the story, as I wanted to keep reading. I am now looking forward to continuing this series - of which there are 20 books so far - I have a lot of catching up to do!

Patti Larsen has written a fast paced, magical YA novel. I loved the way the author has created characters that are lifelike and likable, but with a paranormal twist. I loved the pace and flow. I am adding this author to my Favourite Authors list.

I highly recommend this book (and series) if you love YA or Paranormal Romances. - Lynn Worton

Although Sydlynn is sixteen and clearly full of angst I found her conflict between 'normality' and using her magical powers and interesting one and I feel that Patti Larsen allows Syd to be the most open and honest character in the story, meaning that she is the one we have most affinity with.
I found Family Magic was an original interpretation of the witch coven story; Sydlynn's father is a full Demon who lives in Demonicon; her sister chooses to live in her Demon form, only using magic to hide herself in public; Sassafras is a Demon boy trapped inside a cat's body and although Syd wants her magic removed she finds her powers grow stronger as her family is threatened by an unknown force.
I especially enjoyed the way in which Sydlynn's character develops, not just through her magic but also as an ordinary teenager.
In Family Magic Patti Larsen successfully combines her magical storytelling with a hint of romance, humour and mystery meaning that this would be the perfect cross-genre book and one I would suggest readers add to their TBR pile.
I received this as a review copy, but this has had no influence on my opinion.

My Thoughts - 5 out of 5 unicorns - I loved it!!!

**Received the ebook free in exchange for an honest review as part of the blog tour

I really loved this book :) It was easy to be sucked into Syd's life. High school is a rough enough time without adding witch and demon problems to the mix. She is trying so hard to be her own person on home, but fit in at school. She is an emotional mess, but this is typical for a 16 year old girl. I love how strong she is and that she stands up against bullying. This book is packed with all sorts of things like high school bullies, boys, teen angst, talking cat, vampires, coven, crazy grandma, spells gone awry, and so much more.

I recommend to all paranormal book lovers of YA age or adults. You will not be bored reading this book. And when I looked to see if it is a series, it is and has like 20 books. I'm going to have to read them all!! And I'm going to have to buy them in paperback, so I can have them for my classroom because I think the kids will love them.

I really wanted to enjoy this as the overall theme/idea was good, but the main character's self absorption really started to annoy me. It is probably fine for the age intended audience but any teenager i have known would have reacted somewhat differently to the situation. From that point of view it is great to have a main protagonist who does not confirm to the norm but for an escapist read I found it less satisfying. I will no doubt read more of the series in the hopes that the interesting idea of the story develops into something more satisfying, I am just not in a hurry to do so.

I haven’t read anything by author Patti Larson before and I was so pleased to have found this new series, I suspect it will keep me going for the rest of the year! The story is quite original but it is Patti’s writing which really drew me in. Her style is very descriptive and she really brings her story to life. Definitely a new fan!

An enjoyable read, but I am not sure if I would want to carry on reading the series, I suspect it will be more of the same - daughter rebeling big danger daughter being nice again, what does but it into 4 starts is the fact that it is honest and lets you know at the end that it is a link story. An fun quick read.

the story was interesting, the characters were well written. If your into fantasy/ supernatural books this is very good, but i found the ending not as amazing as it could be, but i am definately looking forward to the next one.
