Product Description

This is a new edition of the Latin textbook that helps the beginner cope with medieval Latin. After dealing with the basic grammar of Latin, this book examines the structure and vocabulary of the records used in local and family research, including parish registers, marriage licences, episcopal visitations, wills, court rolls and deeds. The final chapter explains the abbreviations used and all the necessary tables of declensions and conjugations, with a glossary. New paperback edition.

A very useful reference work which I bought because I needed to translate Latin from various sources like wills or birth, death and marriage records, or manorial rolls and court records. As you travel further back in time, Latin was the commonly used language and a lot of English words are descended from the original Latin or are still used eg ipso facto, ibid, NB etc. This book is aimed at the Local or Family Historian whether amateur or professional genealogist. It is proving a very useful resource book and comes highly recommended.

A good guide for those whose Latin was learnt way back in school. I use for Family History and Genealogy. Very useful.
