I have read this book countless times, since I first read it in 1984. If Jane Austen had lived in East Coast America in the late 20th Century, this is the book she would have written. The plot is less important than the characters, especially the depiction of family life. It's imposible to decide whether this family is deeply dysfunctional or just normal, albeit comprising some idiosyncratic characters, especially the mother, Wendy, a real Jane Austen matriarch. This book never fails to lift my spirits. I was devastated when Laurie Colwin died so young - she was great loss.
