Book Description

A Family Affair is where it all began...Heartache, Betrayal, Forgiveness, Redemption...all wrapped up in the people you will love to love, and those you will love to hate!

When Christine Blacksworth's larger-than-life father is killed on an icy road in Magdalena, New York, a hundred miles from the 'getaway' cabin he visited every month, she discovers a secret that threatens everything she's always held to be true. Her father has another family which includes a mistress and a daughter. Determined to uncover the truth behind her father's secret life, Christine heads to Magdalena, prepared to hate the people who have caused her to question everything she thought she knew about her father. But what she finds is a woman who understands her, a half sister who cherishes her, and a man who could love her if she'll let him. The longer she's around them, the more she questions which family is the real one. . .

About the Author

Mary Campisi writes emotion-packed books about second chances. Whether contemporary romances, women's fiction, or Regency historicals, her books all center on belief in the beauty of that second chance. Mary should have known she’d become a writer when at age thirteen she began changing the ending to all the books she read. It took several years and a number of jobs, including registered nurse, receptionist in a swanky hair salon, accounts payable clerk, and practice manager in an OB/GYN office, for her to rediscover writing. Enter a mouse-less computer, a floppy disk, and a dream large enough to fill a zip drive. The rest of the story lives on in every book she writes. When she’s not working on her craft or following the lives of five adult children, Mary’s digging in the dirt with her flowers and herbs, cooking, reading, walking her rescue lab mix, Cooper, or on the perfect day, riding off into the sunset with her very own ‘hero’ husband on his Ultra Limited aka Harley. 4.0 out of 5 stars The best freebie ever! 9 Aug. 2012
By Mavvis
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I'm a sucker for freebies. Whether it is the latest vitamin drink, chocolate bar or pack of tissue. Sometimes I've been known to walk down a road twice just so I can get two chocolate bars for free. So, when I saw this free book on Amazon that had high ratings I downloaded it just for kicks.

The story is about a man who dies in a car crash and the secret second family he has hidden for 14 years. His wife and daughter have to piece together their lives and discover the other life of a man they thought they knew. We follow the daughter as she goes on a journey to discover the secrets that the second family hold. It is emotional and heartfelt in parts and you like to find out what is happening next. There is romance, strained family relationships and it is quite a pacy read.

Now I am not a huge family saga fan or one of the people that goes gaga over mysteries. However, I did find this book hard to put down and something I would recommend to my friends. The plot is a little predictable but there is something nice about reading a good old fashioned family mystery - one that doesn't feel the need for lots of machine guns or over the top characters. It is the sort of book you can read on a rainy day or in the park. Nothing too taxing or too literary. Just a "nice" read to while the time and I did start to care for the characters which says a lot!

Try it and if you don't like it you shouldn't really complain because it is FREE!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent comfort reading 9 Aug. 2012
By ElaineG TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A nice family drama that you can really get your teeth into and just sit down to read and forget about the outside world. A book stuffed with family secrets, passions, drama, hate and love, the story gently unfolds after the death of Charlie Blacksworth in a car crash when it emerges that he had a second family that he had been visiting every month for 14 years, whilst telling his wife and daughter that he was heading into his cabin for some "me time". Mainly told through the eyes of Charlies' daughter Christine, we see her struggle to come to terms with her father's long term deception and the existence of his other family, including a sister she never knew about.

There are other long hidden family secrets that come to light throughout the story and as other reviewers have said, it is very easy to guess what is going to happen, but the beautiful way it is written with each characters' emotional responses to what happens, means that you just keep on reading to get to the "how" of what is going to unfold. The characters are extremely believable and likeable; as you are reading you really start to root for them and want things to work out for them. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars lovely 10 Oct. 2013
By Divine
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A lovely book. Easy read but not boring. Good story with a happy ending, which is just what you need sometimes. Confirms money isn't everything! Would recommend to all, just don't think to hard about the storyline and enjoy the quirky little laughs, the smiles and the tears of joy and sadness the story makes you feel. 5 stars because the book was a nice all rounder, with real emotions felt, if you let the characters in.
Happy reading.

3.0 out of 5 stars Made a Change.... 28 Oct. 2012
By Galning
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
....from the usual type of books I prefer.

I empathised more with the need for Christine to know who her "other family" was and what the pull was back to her father. The "duty" to her mother and fiancee....that kind of thing leaves me cold. When your mother's a manipulative schemer you soon come to realise that you give an inch and she'll take a mile. Not saying "no" just made this supposedly killer-in-the-boardroom businesswoman just come over as limp.

I also wasn't sure about the Nate character. A man that holds that much resentment is not a grown up and I'm not sure the outcome would have been so happy.

But, this is over analysing character traits, as we tend to do in a review. It was a pleasant enough read - but I wouldn't read it again and, on the basis of this book, I'm not sure I'd read the author again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not so much witch-crafty as well-craft-y 2 Aug. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A bit overstimulated by all the paranormal and action-adventure romance around, I decided to branch back into the more "normal" romance genre in a bid to reconnect with things that could actually happen in real life.

This tale does not suffer from its lack of vampires or artillery; in fact, I was a little worried when I started reading that the emotional nature of an infidelity story would make it a bit depressing. I should have had more faith in the author.

I have the bad Kindle habit of flicking between books when I'm not sure what I want to read and nothing pulls me in. I downloaded this, opened it to have a glance and then....well.....finished it in one go. Not sure I even remember stopping to make a cup of tea.

No spoilers, as the plot is outlined well enough in the blurb. But what I will say is that Ms Campisi wields a compassionate pen (by which I mean keyboard) and has created a believable world filled with believable characters...albeit comfortably encapsulated in a somewhat predictable story. Like any writer worth her salt, though, she has managed to overcome the fact that you might be able to guess what's going to happen by connecting to the characters through the description of their emotional experience rather than the story itself.

This is how a good story stands out from what can so easily fall into cliche and this is why this book is well worth a read.
