Product Description

The Guardian
...interesting precisely because its authors ... are able to break through both left and right knee-jerk responses.

Clifford Longley, The Daily Telegraph
It was the publication in 1992 of the now famous Families Without Fatherhood report by two left-wing sociologists, Norman Dennis and George Erdos, which first called this whole anti-marriage (and anti-masculine) ideology into question. They pointed to the gradual collapse of the internal coherence of working-class culture caused by the relegation of men to the margins of social and family life in the inner cities and council estates of Britain. In doing so they were challenging the social work orthodoxy head on."

5.0 out of 5 stars A very important book, 6 May 2001
By A Customer
This book is a 'must-read'. The authors are very experienced academics who have studied the problems issuing from fatherlessness in postwar Britain, and expose the way in which anti-family social research, resting upon the dogmas of radical feminism and theoretical Marxism, has influenced social policy and lawmaking so that the family and marriage have been devalued. There are fewer incentives to fatherhood than there used to be, so young men particularly in poor areas choose not to marry the mothers of their children. These mothers and children therefore live in poverty while rootless young men who have not been socialised into family life increasingly drop out of mainstream society. This is the legacy of the irresponsible, narcissistic social agenda of post-1960s New Left 'intellectuals'. At last books like this are coming out and telling the truth. At last the internet provides the freedom for ordinary people to write about this issues without being censored by New Left newspaper editors.
