5.0 out of 5 stars aeternal forgotten spain, 25 Jul 2004
By Carlos Vazquez Quintana "cvq" (Linares- Spain) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
To understand this novel perhaps it's necessary to know the land and people of Extremadura, one of the poorest regions of Spain, and although the action happens shortly before the Spanish Civil War, and having changed Spain very much, still few years ago, a killing between rural families from a village of Extremadura happened truly.
Because the main themes of Pascual Duarte are hate and violence, and all that provoked by a situation of endogamy, isolation, obscurantism, poverty, plagues, illiteracy and extreme climate with terrible heat or cold as happens in Extremadura. This book threw to fame to Camilo J Cela, an author that won the Nobel prize although I think he was an irregular writer with baroque excess, but this work is between his best, brilliant, sober and terribly direct. The novel begins with Pascual Duarte in jail, writing a letter to the judge the day before his execution for murder "...Sir, I'm not a bad man..." Perhaps this is true, but Pascual is brisk and violent. It seems effectively at bottom he's a person with some sense of nobility, but his very hot temper and low education- a certain sad destiny very own of old Spain- makes he has to solve his numerous problems with the only abilities he masters extraordinarily: shotgun and jack knife, both learned in these hard countryside for hunting -an important ability in the rural Spain of the 1930's if one wanted to eat, and for all class of tasks from fighting to carve wood. Sister of Pascual works at a bordello in a people of Badajoz. His wife his killed shortly after his marriage by a mule and Pascual slaughters the animal brutally. A short visit to Madrid when he has some family surprises Pascual because here the men don't fight fiercely for a simple bad eyesight. Sure, Duarte isn't made for living in a city or capital, he simply doesn't understand common laws and finally, after several killings, he's arrested by the Guardia Civil. So explained, Pascual Duarte can seem the history of some typical Spain, but bullfight or flamenco never appears in this novel and his quality exceeds widely that level.
