Certainly, the ska genre of music is packed with a flowing, quasi-hypnotic, rhythmic tempo that originates from its place of conception, Jamaica in the 50s and 60's with exponents such as The Skatalites, and Bob Marley. The second wave of ska happened in England late 70s and 80's with bands like The Specials and Madness bringing it back into mainstream popularity. The third wave emerged in the US (not to be outdone) late 90s - early 2000s revived by bands such as The Uptones, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Reel Big Fish.
"Fame Fortune And Fornication", is a ska album by Reel Big Fish from Huntington Beach, California, formed in 1992 and still going to day but with only one original member, Aaron Barrett. This is an album of covers from the likes of Poison, Van Morrison and Tom Petty which proves to be both a blessing and a curse, because it does not contain the dearth of creativity heard on albums "Monkey's For Nothing", and "Chimps For Free", but it also means we don't get much of the great material of their earlier albums.
The first track is Poisons "Nothing But A Good Time" and is by far and away the best track on the album. Regrettably the following tracks fail to live up to the bands known potential and do give the album a feel that it was a bit hurriedly cobbled together as if there was a a desire to get it recorded as quickly as possible and depart the studio with haste. Having said this it is nevertheless quite an enjoyable listening experience, marred somewhat by knowing that Reel Big Fish can do much better than this.
