Once more Loudon brings to his new and old fans a potpourri of his life observations, mostly a view from the outside looking into his own life. His ability to laugh at his own fortunes (and mostly misfortunes) shines through in this presentation of songs. We get a glimps of his childhood in "Westchester County" where he was a rich kid with all the priviledges, and a wry observation of childhood at "Five Years Old". "The Grammy Song" and "Fame and Wealth" are a sharp stab at his own goals and ambitions for recognition in the industry. This is Loudon at his best doing what only he can do, both lyrical and musical perfection.

I was given this record as a gift and initially I was very disappointed because I wasn't a fan of Loudon and I was expecting another record entirely. However, once I listened to it I was instantly converted - on every level this is an excellent record. I'd presumed Loudon was just a singer of funny songs and while there are some funny songs here, such as "Fame and wealth" and "Dump the dog", even these are very well crafted with good melodies and sharp insight. In fact the majority of the songs are (relatively) serious, exploring childhood and family relationships - his with his parents, his sister, his wife and thier children. These songs are well-observed, at times brutally honest and self-effacing and with their bittersweet melodies perfectly complementing their bittersweet subject matter. Among my many favourites are "Westchester County" and "April's Fool Day morn" both of which have great tunes and lyrics that can turn on a dime from humour to pathos. Loudon works much the same territory as Randy Newman but on this showing has much better tunes. Highly recomended.
