I have found Richard Hawley a strange fish in terms of personality at gigs. I like the Sheffield steel angle but he can be an eejit with the awkward I hate Glasgow when in Edinburgh and vice versa. However, when he sings he is talented and sweeter than honey.

False lights is an excellent EP of beautiful sea shanties. Remorse code is an epic 9 minutes plus and is worth the retail cost on its own. I cannot recall if its Pete Molinari who sets the rythmn on this piece but it is excellent and bless whoever is playing. Indeed bless the whole band. 'The Storm' and 'Shallow Brown' are mixed up on the album play list - these things do not matter as Hawley sweeps us of our beaches.

As ever Richard Hawley creates the perfect musical and lyrical delight. Have had to buy two copies as I don't want to open the sealed record!Don't mind!

Like most people, I review too little of what I really like, so will share this one to make up. If you have got as far as reading this review, just buy the EP! There is something timeless and very literary, thought-provoking and haunting about this long (but too short) EP. It will change you, I am sure. The lyrics of the sea-themed songs play on words ("Remorse Code") and are presented as if musical folk-tales ("The Ellan Vannin Tragedy"). Yet, they have that Hawley "twang and bounce" to them, hooking you and playing over in your head off and on through the day. The appeal is almost universal. I, and my kids, literally shuddered on first hearing "The Ellan Vannin..." and whenever we see dark clouds it's difficult not to think or say "There's a Storm A Comin'". As another reviewer has said, Richard Hawley's voice here is like velvet, and combined with impeccable production the music oozes and flows like waves lapping the shore. The CD accompanying the vinyl is a very nice convenient addition for the car or quick playing at home, and the vinyl itself is perfectly heavy, flat, quiet, and, well, perfect! Keep in mind this is now a few years old and so may presumably become unavailable quite soon. (If you are ordering over Christmas, be aware that Amazon's "frustration free packaging", as in the description for this item, can come unmarked and give very little protection compared to Amazon's older boxed approach to shipping vinyl or the "record boxes" used by certain overseas sellers, which allow greater cushioning against postal impacts. Mine arrived perfect.)

Absolutely a fantastic vinyl pressing, four excellent songs by Richard Hawley with a nautical theme, only complaint why could this not have been an LP!!!
