Book Description

3 Dec 2008
April 1986: Number 4 Reactor, Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station, explodes, releasing a deadly cocktail of radioactive materials. The fallout reaches Britain three days later, as the world slowly wakes up to the worst nuclear accident in history... Two decades later, four retired British civil servants are found dead. The deaths do not appear suspicious, and the men seem unconnected. Then an old man commits suicide. Before he dies, he sends a document to a young journalist. It reveals a terrifying secret at the heart of Britain's nuclear establishment, a secret people are prepared to kill for. A secret vital to Britain's security. A secret worth billions. Has the government covered up the true effects of the radioactive dust that settled across Britain? And why? Or is the truth far worse...?

4.0 out of 5 stars A disturbingly plausible tale.... 22 Jan 2009
I normally shy away from this type of fictional writing on the basis that after a few chapters I grow increasingly tired of the all too familiar public schoolboy superiority written into the central character. What was different this time was not just the Author's main protagonist but also the plot.

After a decade of Bush and Blair prancing around the political scene at the expense of billions of pounds and hundreds of thousands of innocent lives, the book played heavily on my willingness to accept the notion that CEOs and politicians occupying the highest offices in the land would act with similar disdain on home turf.

Very engaging with plenty of humour and honesty underlying a sinister tale of modern society.

I would recommend it highly.

Excellent - particularly as this looks like a 'first book'? The plot is intelligent, well crafted and full of suspense. Will keep an eye out for this author.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dan Brown entertainment with a believable plot. 15 April 2009
A first class tale of political "cover ups" and underdogs on the run. Had me rooting for the heroes all the way, story flows well, characters are believable, as is the tale.

It proved to be a most entertaining tale and informative without getting too technical. I would certainly recommend this book to anyone wanting a very true feeling in their fiction.

This is without doubt one of the best thrillers I have read in a long time.

The story is satisfyingly intricate without ever over complicating matters, the characters are believable without becoming stereotypes and the book relishes in heading deliberately towards the old clichés before veering away in unexpected directions.

It is hard to believe this is a first time novel, with the author deftly handling half a dozen storylines across a substantial work. I especially enjoyed the thrilling opening sections, dropping the reader into the heart of the Chernobyl Nuclear disaster, so much so, I quickly became absorbed and quite forgot it was merely setting the scene for the main story.

With obvious attention to detail and research, the story feels unnervingly plausible, expertly teasing out the suspense to create a great British conspiracy tale.

Jonathan Guppy gives a sharp modern edge to the classic political thriller, and the result is a more thoughtful, engaging and enjoyable example than I have read in a long time.
