Fallout 3 is a game well worth owning and playing. It is one of the best western RPG's on the market and is easily one of the greatest games of 2008. The distopian future that Bethesda have crafted is both stunning and inspiring. They truly capture the bleakness that such a turn of events would have. Yet hidden in this dark and oft depressing capital wasteland are wonderful characters and uplifiting moments of human nature.
The emphasis is more on character/plot development as opposed to excessive character leveling. Thankfully the game doesn't punish you for not having a high levelled character (it's completable by level 10 or so), however you will find that you easily get to a high level simply by playing the main quest and few of the side quests.
In order to get the most from this title be prepared to spend a lot of time. Although the main quest can be done in about 10 hours (not certain on this, I didn't finish the game until everything else was done) this would mean missing all the wonderful side quests, which add to the overall plot but not to the main arc. By not doing them you would only be playing half the game.
The combat system can be a little frustrating at first, a low levelled character tends to miss a lot and any hits you do get do very little damage. This problem really does dissapear after about level 5/6. I rarely died after this and when I did it was my own (stupid) fault. Be warned though-the game uses a rolling dice method to decide what hits and what doesn't-this is in contrast to games like Halo where you always hit what you aim for. I think the system takes a little getting used to, especially when your accustomed to traditional FPS's.
Finally I have to comment on what a deal this game is compared to the original release. It includes all five DLC'c, each well worth playing, for no extra cost. Not that I regret buying any of the DLC's, I love this game so much I may even purchase the game of the year edition, just to have it all in one place!
In summary there is plethera of things to do, unmarked quests, side quests and of course the main quest. If you embark on this game make sure you have plenty of time and a little patience, if you do you will be rewarded by an emensly enjoyable title full of little gems and stunning set pieces. A true bargain!
