Book Description

After his big-shot life in New York tragically falls apart, James Montgomery returns to his small hometown in south Georgia a defeated and broken man. All he has left is his mother to help him heal and regain his confidence before he’s ready to get back out and re-conquer the world.

But being big-city gay in a small southern town has its own challenges. In addition to coming to grips with what happened in New York, his hometown of Lawder throws its own curveballs at him. James is confronted with a bitter enemy from his school days, and frustratingly can’t seem to avoid the guy. His mother suddenly wants to expand the family. The one guy James takes a liking to and starts dating has a lot of hang-ups about being gay. And he watches almost helplessly as a new young bully starts to repeat the kind of abuse he suffered during his own school days.

Here where he grew up, the one place he should feel safe, James feels maddeningly off-balance. He starts to think that maybe going home was a bad idea after all. Maybe he’d be better off moving on and really starting over, completely from scratch. Maybe he should walk away from Lawder, just like he walked away from his life in New York.

But maybe, if he’d give it a chance, he’d re-think everything he ever thought he wanted out of life. And maybe what he thought was important, isn’t so important after all. Maybe he could have everything he never realized he wanted, if he just looked around himself for a moment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fab read 10 May 2014

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I wish I had read this before The Last Day of Summer, but in retrospect it was still a good stand alone. This story is long and thorough, (fantastic value at 77p) JF takes his time letting the characters develop and for me the story says it all. its not a quick thrill seeker with lots of gratuitous sex but a deep and meaningful tale of loss, love, friendship and how life affects us all.
Some characters, especially Jerry are sometimes larger than life and if I had friends like these I would feel as if I were the luckiest person alive. I like this man's work, its so much deeper, thoughtful, thought provoking and more real than a lot of the other m/m offerings I have read. The characters are believable, likeable and much less shallow than the normal run of the mill guys. This writer, for me, is so much better than most of the writers in this genre, even if he doesn't give steamy sex and you actually have to use a bit of imagination for once, it is after all the story that matters and I lost myself in Lawder, James, Kevin and their lives. Brilliant read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful 8 Oct. 2012
By Patsy O
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I would have loved to have given this a 5* rating, but unfortunately the very few typos in it made it a bit less than perfect, hence the 4* I gave it. It is not what I'd call a racy story, and it did take me a while to get into it, but when I did, I was glad. It is such a REAL story, a story I could relate to - having had my fair share of reading about Billionaire Adonises and their trips. This is the 3 rd book this year to make me cry, and I have read plenty. I just absolutely loved this and would recommend it to everyone.

Although it is about gay relationships in the main, everything in the book is balanced and there is no porn in it either. I cannot say how much I loved reading this book, and look forward to re-reading it.

4.0 out of 5 stars lovely romance 20 May 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Not many authors bother to actually write a romantic story in this genre. There is virtually no sex in it, which made a nice change. He writes such an in depth characterisation of each person, that you feel that you can almost see the characters brain ticking over in thought. I have read a couple of other of this authors books, one was great, Latakia, and one that so was awfully explicit and violent that I had to return it. Will definitely keep an eye out for this author. Well done.

4.0 out of 5 stars OK read 21 Sept. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
A decent enough story, especially for the price that is being charged. Fairly well developed characterisations (Amazon says I'm spelling that word wrong - presumably because I haven't put a 'z' in it). The main character could probably use a slap on occasion and someone to tell him to get a grip/cheer up - and there's a little bit of cowboy cliche thrown in for good measure - but without spoiling it too much (I hope) there is a happy ending, although probably not a million miles away from the one you might expect.
Would expect to pay more for this download (when compared to lesser stories that I have paid more for that had worse plots and non-existent proof readers). This book's proof reader did miss a few things but not enough to spoil the overall experience. Will be looking at other stories by this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars What is not to like about this book 26 Jan. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I found this book a fantastic read. The author writes about the characters so that you can actually feel like you have known them for years, like you are actually there. OK so there are no graphic sex scenes, so what, I for one actually like this as it means that I can use my own imagination as to what transpires between them. The so called crude banter referred to by one other reviewer actually had me laughing out loud. Just the sort of thing that goes on between close friends and I am glad it was included. All in all a really good value love story that tells it how it is, the highs, the lows, the happiness and the pain. Read it you won't be disappointed

4.0 out of 5 stars excellent value 8 Aug. 2012
By zoogogo
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is excellent value. The story of a saddened, disillusioned man who let ambition get the better of him and let something precious slip through his fingers.
This is his journey back to true values and includes some amusing characters including an obsessive dog. The story takes place over a about a year and gives plenty of time for the developement of relationships and feelings, until a happy ending is reached.
