Book Description

23 Aug 2012

Meet Ophelia, high school senior, daughter of the Danish king's most trusted adviser, and longtime girlfriend of Prince Hamlet. She lives a glamorous life and has a royal social circle and her beautiful face is splashed across magazines and television screens. But it comes with a price. Her life is dominated not only by Hamlet's fame and his overbearing royal family but also by the paparazzi who hound them wherever they go.

After the sudden and suspicious death of his father, the king, Hamlet spirals dangerously toward madness and Ophelia finds herself torn between loyalty to her boyfriend, her father, her country and her true self.

In this stunning contemporary retelling of Shakespeare's Hamlet from Ophelia's point of view, debut author Michelle Ray brilliantly weaves together old and new. Filled with drama, romance, tragedy, and humor, Fallling for Hamlet is a compulsively readable novel. And this time, Ophelia doesn't die. Take that, Hamlet!

Review

"Sexy and searing, Falling for Hamlet is much more than a riveting retelling of a Shakespearean classic. Michelle Ray has crafted an artful story of a girl who comes unapologetically and forcefully into her own."--Justina Chen, author of North of Beautiful

Book Description

First comes love, then comes madness in this provocative, debut YA retelling of Hamlet, told from the point of view of a modern-day Ophelia.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great retelling 27 Nov 2011
Format:Hardcover
Hamlet is one of Shakespeare's better known plays. Here, Michelle Ray brings it right up to date, setting it in modern day Denmark. Ophelia is Prince Hamlet's girlfriend, also daughter of the King's trusted advisors. Then the king is killed under suspicious circumstances and Hamlet slowly goes mad. Surrounded by the royal family and the press, Ophelia's options become more and more limited, and her life starts edging away from normality.
As Hamlet is one of my favourite Shakespeares, I couldn't wait to see how this would be put together. Michelle Ray has taken the major points of the play, and the best known speeches, and brought them up to date for modern readers.
In the author notes, she says how hard it was updating some parts, like the To Be or Not to Be. I agree with her in that it would be quite clunky if said aloud, and I like how she pulled it off in the end. Other speeches, such as Laertes' violet in the youth of primy nature one, were also modified but kept recognisable.
Ophelia has a new dimension built into her, as well as the crazy girl we see in the original. Having a book more devoted to her lets us explore her character more, which Michelle Ray has done very well. She has a group of friends outside the palace, and is also possibly falling a little in love with someone other than Hamlet. Horatio too we see a lot more of, as in this, he, Ophelia and Hamlet all have known eachother for a long time.
I love the way that some scenes were played out, for example the get thee to a nunnery one being played out in public in a limo. And there were some things I'd have never expected, such as the big scene in which the majority of the royal family is killed off, being played at a lacrosse match, which I didn't think would work but somehow it did.

5.0 out of 5 stars I cannot recommend highly enough 6 Sep 2012

This review contains spoilers for Hamlet just in case you know you want to read the original.

As you are already aware from my review of Ophelia (here) I hate Hamlet even my oldest daughter quotes me when ever she is asked about Hamlet `Everyone Dies' However, I have to tell you this book blew me away, I completely love it to the point of contemplating keeping it on my permanent shelf but I am sending it to someone who I know is going to love it as much as I did.

So you are probably wondering what exactly Michelle Ray manage to convince a Hamlet Hater to love a re-imaging. If I say everything will you just trust me on that? What?? You need convincing.....

Told from Ophelia's point of view combining modern interview techniques identifiable with today's TV chat shows immediately makes the story more relatable. At first the interspersing of Ophelia's TV interview with the unfolding main plot was a little disorientating until realization dawns of just how clever the writing is to combine such multi-layers with past and present revelations yet still maintaining all the elements of the original story.

Ophelia's life has never been what you would consider normal; living within the royal social circle, constantly being watched both in public and surprisingly in private. It is easy to put yourself in Ophelia's position, all her actions are scrutinized and put out for public display. you can almost feel the tension this lifestyle causes emanating from the pages. Teens can relate Ophelia to today's pop/movie stars who have their lives splashed across the media networks.

Ophelia's narrative voice makes her not only realistic but identifiable. When Ophelia begins to question the direction her life is taking it is easy to sympathize with her.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ophelia is Amazing 28 Jun 2011

This book will make even the most non Shakespeare lover want to re-read/watch Hamlet. However, it is a wonderful book all on its own for all readers. The poignant story of the young girl dating the celebrity hits home on so many levels. The truth all of our mothers wanted us to learn - "Don't lose yourself for any man." I highly recommend for all young adult readers and for all Shakespeare lovers and everyone in between. A great book for mothers and daughters to read together. THIS BOOK NEEDS TO BE A MOVIE! Congratulations Michelle Ray on your debut book. Can hardly wait to read the next one.

2.0 out of 5 stars Oh dear. Reduced to skimming. 4 Feb 2012

Gertrude is eternally bristling with indignation or staring down her nose in a cartoony fashion. That's the kind of characterization that supposedly fuels mortal conflict. Ophelia gets all het up over an image of Hamlet hoisting a girl in a nightclub so she sleeps with another guy for revenge -- but then it turns out the girl had hurt her ankle or something and Hamlet was kindly assisting her to the first aid station, nothing more. That's the sort of misunderstanding that separates lovers.

This was a clever idea but it really needs better execution. Not once did I ever feel this Ophelia and Hamlet actually loved each other. They date, they talk, they misunderstand each other and say horrible things, they text, they communicate through Horatio, they leave town, go to classes, blah blah. Where is the passion, where is the fundamental enigma of Hamlet?

3.0 out of 5 stars Better pacing would have made the story a lot easier to read 6 Sep 2011
By onepagereviews - Published on Amazon.com

If I had to choose one word to describe this book it would be "intense." Of course, with Shakespeare's "Hamlet" being the basis for this story, how could it be anything else?

I've got to be honest - I've never actually read this particular Shakespeare play. I know the general plot twists (king killed, Hamlet sees ghost, everyone dies, etc.), but I was still surprised by a few of them when I read this version. I'm not sure if I would have compared Michelle Ray's version to the original more if I had actually read the original, but I thought she did a good job with this adaptation, staying true to the story with the one main exception: Ophelia doesn't die mid-book like in the play.

There was a lot of playing with form in this book - the story is told through Ophelia's POV, as well as snippets from her police interrogation and a talk show she appears on after everything in the book takes place. That really added tension, I think. I loved the three different timelines!

The actual character of Ophelia was a little troubling at times. I just couldn't understand why she would stick with Hamlet after all the things he does. I mean, he's straight crazy. I get that she loves him, but I just had to shake my head a lot when she would go running back to him. The plot wouldn't have held up without their interaction, though, so I guess Ophelia's idiocy was necessary to keep things moving.

Pacing, however, was a general problem throughout the novel, I thought. The first 200 pages or so are really slow. There are a few scenes that were poignant or moving, but overall, they're pretty dry. I was never really invested in the story or the characters until tragedy hits Ophelia close to home (around page 250). I wished Michelle Ray had picked up the pace a few times, kept things moving more quickly. I was often bored.

But once you make that leap into the climax of the story, everything happens in a whirlwind. There's tension galore, with heartbreak and death and other delicious plot twists. Too bad it took that long to get to the good part.

While Falling for Hamlet wasn't my favorite retelling, I would definitely be interested in another book by Michelle Ray. Hopefully, her style will grow some more so that her plot doesn't lag and we'll get an entire book of juicy drama!
